new to irns

Post by thorburn »

I am wanting to start owning IRNs and keep them in an aviary, but am wanting to know what types of birds do they go well with? Aviary is 20' x 5'. What other types of parrots can I have in same aviary?

Not a very good idea to have them housed with other birds, especially if you want to breed them.

Only house with the same species. You can probably have 4-6 pairs in that size aviary.

I'd just say IRNs cos I like them. They have personality and I am not a fan cockatiels - I think they are overgrown budgies (just my bias, all the ones i have known of others have been grumpy birds and they aren't that clever)
A bit harsh, but I just love Ringnecks - and if you are looking at them as aviary birds, watching them fly is a joy - they look magnificent.

Cockatiels are actually a cockatoo species... Nothing to do with budgies at all. Some are very gentle birds. I was fostering one here (for training), who was not so gentle... Took me 2 months before I could rehome him.

ha ha, I just meant budgies figuratively  I've just never had a thing for Cockatiels - would rather have a budgie to be honest! Mind you, have had good experiences with them.
Should have realised the similarity with a Cockatoo!!

I'm kinda in the same boat with you on that. Their personality is usually... lacking in comparison to other parrots. Maybe not lacking, but definitely different. And not my personal preference. I see more in common with my budgies and the 'tiels than with the 'tiels and the IRNs. :?

They aren't as intelligent as IRNs- but on the other hand, our IRNs may not be as intelligent as a 'too, macaw, or grey. :D

Back on topic...

No, smaller isn't always better. IRNs are so hardy, lol! But if you want, you could check out some of the conures as well.

I've been called 'birdbrained' before, but somehow I don't think this is what they meant. say:hah-nay

I woulds go with the irns, they come in so many different colours and even aviary birds have a real character about them.
