Somehow this seems like a silly question...

Post by Shelby »

But I was told that male IRN's tend to talk more and talk easier than females.. is this true? Shelby's prior owner bought a language tape and played it over and over and over hoping to help her talk but she never has. I just wondered, at her age (16) is she too old to learn to talk now? And is it because she's female that she's not as inclined?

See where the silly part of the question comes in? LOL

No silly questions ;)

Well I have no idea about the whole talking thing but if my Prinny is a girl she talks like there is no tomorrow. I have heard that females talk just as much as the males do but I would guess that the males are a little more 'show offy'

Any tricks to get her to talk? She will meow like a cat.. when she's bored and needs entertainment in the form of "playing" with the cats.. they've thankfully learned to ignore her before they lost any digits

I've been thinking of getting a young conure and housing them close to each other and hopefully teaching the conure to talk which might help her get the idea?

We just got our first IRN a month ago. When we leave, we have been leaving the radio on or the tv on. I was laying on the bed next to our bird a week or so ago, and I noticed that it was trying to talk. It sounded like "What ya doing? Hi baby!" I was so excited! But if I was you I would try to leave the radio on or tv sometimes. Keeps them entertained. I have also heard that males talk more and better than female IRN's also. I don't believe that is true. I have seen females talk just as well as male IRN's. We don't know if our IRN is a male or female yet, because it is only 9 months old, but I was thinking about going to get it a dna test here soon!

talking

Post by Bird crazy »

I'm not sure either about age/sex but what I have read is that some just don't talk. Maybe just doesn't want to or has not seen the need to.
I will relate an experience my brother had, he adopted an african grey parrot that the owner said was a "stupid" bird, it couldn't even talk. My brother only had the bird about a month when it started to talk and it was already an adult when he got it. The bird was perhaps in a situation where the people did not stimulate it's need or desire to communicate.

So I say approach Shelby like she will talk. Talk to her, a little higher pitched and with excitement in your voice, and try to say the same thing with the same inflection at the same situation or time each day and she will associate it. For instance, each time I offerred Nila something to eat, I would first put it to my mouth and say "good, good", then offer it to him, now when he sees me eat something and wants it he says "good, good" because he associates the sound with getting what he wants. Also I brought Priya, dna female home from the pet store, put her with Nila, dna male and he taught her to talk in about 2 weeks. So here's another attempt at spreading MBS, if you get a bird that talks it may help.

I know alot of ringnecks. Honestly, I have to admit that of the ringnecks 'I know' males are FAR better talkers.

They do it more often and much more clearer. Baby is male and he literally sounds SO clear, he even has a southern accent. I **** you not.

Go to YouTube.com and look at ringneck videos, more males than females are with speech.

Is it a sex thing or an owner thing? I dont know. What I do know is... I talk alot, Baby talks alot. (Male)

Dani talks alot, prinny and aggie talks alot. (little girls)

So, Im torn between sex and environment.

Im going with sex, Im forced to because Peaches or any of my other birds have ever said a word, course they cant get one in edge-wise with Baby around.

They tried those with Shelby before I got her... which prompted the one and only time they *think* she actually spoke.

It sounded something like FOR THE LOVE OF GOD TURN OFF THE DAMN CD!!!!

Guess that shouldn't be too surprising ;) 8) Tho the African Grey they had did learn to say Heeelllllpppppp Meeeeeeeeeee    from watching movies with the kids. Which kind of makes your toes curl when you hear it at night and don't know where it's coming from :?

or you could just teach them to chew all the buttons off of the remote and then the game would never come on (bet that would be easy to teach)

I did something awful while in a heated marital battle.

I cannot believe I did this. I sure cant believe Im admitting it.

I was MAD so I removed myself from the situation by going to my room. I must look really stupid running over the the stand, grabbing baby and storming off to my room.

That somehow has to take A LOT of the drama out of it... but I do it. -sigh-

When Im mad sad whatever, I want Baby so I grab him really sumconsciously as I storm out with a bird on my finger looking around like WTF'ed I do man?

Anyway, I tossed him on his perch and he started jabbering and out of anger I said, Baby... say, 'Youre and asshole'. Being mad, I was enjoyin being with my husband in mind while being awful.

Well, I didnt really expect nothing, did it probably 4 times so my ol man could hear me. Baby didnt seem to be turning his head showing interest in the phrase so nothing else was thought of it.

A few nights later I am in the kitchen writing on the dry erase board so he starts: "Baby wanna treat! Good boy Baby!! Kiss kiss *click*click*click*(broken record anytime someone is in the kitchen).

He had eaten enough and should have already been tucked anyway so I just pretend not to hear him. About 5 minutes into his broken record speech he inserts 'Youre an asshole' between 'Wanna treat' and 'Good Boy'.

So irresponsible of me but I have learned from my mistakes. And wont repeat them.

And so out of my character.

That was the day he bought the boat and didnt even run it past me. You just dont do that... surprise or not. Not a ticket item like that.

MAD as fire.

I feel better telling it though. -sigh-
