The first introductions went very well. They're happily eat out of the same bowl. No aggression. Ani gets on Skye's nerves sometimes though. Ani cries like all the time (is that normal?) and I swear Skye's thinking "Shut up Ani!" Skye strikes at him a little bit (not enough to do any damage) and is having no problem showing who's boss. He is the older dominant bird after all. He knows that. Skye is becoming more and more tolerant of his baby behaviors every day.

Skye is cuddly with only me. He'll step up for anyone, but he only lets me give him scritchies. Even then, he doesn't always accept them from me. I converted him from all seed to pellets, fresh veggies, and fruits. Now he loves his fruits, veggies, and pellets more than his seed. I can put some seed in a small dish in his cage and I know he wont just scarf it all up. I bought some Zupreeme Aviant Entres pellets yesterday to see what they think of it. Skye was the first one to pick one up, but he didn't eat it. I have him on lafebers (sp?). I gotta get that baby to eat something more than only seed. I'm mixing the two varieties of pellets we have in with seed. We'll see.

Ani is cuddly with anyone and steps up for anyone. It's only a matter of time until Ani becomes as independent as Skye is. Skye is still loving and affectionate though. Ani cries when we leave the room. It's the cutest sound. He sounds like a little kitten. I squeak at him he squeaks right back. He flies to me sometimes when he wants cuddles. He is a bit thin right now. What are some foods to help a bird gain weight? Do babies feel thin before they really get those wing muscles developed and strengthened? Am I worrying about something that's normal here? lol

Picture time!

A long overdue picture of the play gym my dad and I built last summer/fall. Sorry about the messiness. :D

About the seeds, don't worry, Ani can eat seeds for the next 8 years of his life and would still be able to switch over to pellets and become healthy, living a long time life.

Your question was silly  . You asked what makes a bird gain weight? Well of course it wont be pellets, it will be junk food & it depends on the bird if it wants to eat twice as much.

Ani should be fine, over time Ani will become larger and gain weight normally as Ani matures.

Oh my question is, is Ani caged with Skye right now? sorry if you said already.

Thanks!! I totally feel better now. :D Someone on another forum told me that babies are always thin and scrawny and reach their mature weight later on.

Hehe no I haven't mentioned. Ani is not in with Skye yet. I give Ani some time alone to check out the big cage, but right now he's staying in Skye's travel cage. We'll see how it goes. I'm not housing them together until I'm sure Ani is male. If Ani is female, I'm going to get a double decker cage or a double wide with a divider just for the sake of saving space. Space is rather limited in our house. We'll see how it all goes. I ordered the DNA sexing kit. It should be here any day.

EDITED to add:
I have just received the DNA sexing kit. I have one for blood and one for feathers. Which one do you guys think is better? (Better as in which is the least intrusive and painful for Ani) If feather testing is best, how many feathers and from where on the baby's body.

Thanks tons!

Just to let you know, I have always found that lutino IRN are very slender and lean naturally, just my experience. They seem to be a much slighter bird than the blue and green, especially the females.

Ohh good i feel better. Something about Ani says female. I'm sending in the test kit today. We'll see. Sheesh I'm excited to know. Ani isn't really this baby's official name either.... I've just been calling him that until I know for sure what gender this baby is.

I went with plucking feathers. I don't see the need to make birds bleed unnecessarily unless it's in a completely sanitized environment. I took 7 feathers, just in case not all of them had a usable amount of DNA on them. He didn't seem to notice at all. He didn't twitch even. I still gave him lots of scritchies afterward :D
