I am curious...since we have no place to tell of our IRNs...

Post by Dani03 »

Hey everyone. I am so curious to know what kind of bird do you own? I mean what are your IRNs tempermant like? Where did you get yours from? Do they talk yet? Are they sweet and cuddly or would rather rip a finger off? I think it would be nice to have a section where we could list our birdies...I dunno about everyone else but I LOVE to hear about other IRNs. Every since I got my Prinny I can't get enough of these birds. So I was just wondering if everyone wouldn't mind posting about their own bird under this thread so everyone can enjoy knowing about this species.

I'll start with my baby. Her name is Princess but we call her Prinny for short. She is an albino and probably will never get a ring if she is a boy (I call her 'she' because we are pretty sure she's a girl  ) I had gone down to my favorite breeder and found that she had these beautiful new birds that just had a clutch. I had no idea what they were so she told me about them. She even let me hold the father of the clutch. Wow he was so pretty. She let me have my pick of the clutch and I sat there for like a an hour seeing what one I wanted. Of course I ended up with my Princess. I wouldn't trade her for the world. She is the nicest bird. She has only bitten me once and that was on accident (she was ripping into a paper towel and got my finger) She has the nicest tempermant but she can be a handful at times  . We are still awaiting that bluffing stage but I think we'll have smooth sailing over that. She does like to rip into anything paper so I have to keep my bills far away from her lol. She is mumbling to herself (a good sign of future talking) but is still too young. I think she is about 5-6 months old so maybe in a few more months she be a little chatter box. She does however have that wolf whistle down and the 'clicking' noise that is made with your tongue to call a cat or dog.

So if you wouldn't mind posting about your IRN in this thread...would be greatly appericiated by many (or maybe it's just me  ) anyway I think we all would benefit from knowing a little bit about everyone's bird.

Thanks, Dani :D

I have two, both girls.

Baby (5 months old):

She is sweet, mean, bitey, cute, tempermental, jealous, stubborn, lives her life for her with no help from anyone, thank you.

Peek-a-Boo (2 yrs)

She is sweet, never bites unless you freak her out, ALWAYS wants to be with me, screams until I let her on my shoulder or atleast hold her. (I wear a hat, I'm no idiot, these are wild animals). She REQUIRES this handling. She won't stop until you pet her. You can touch her anywhere you want and she loves it. She cocks her head back for a nice neck scratching, whereas, the baby cocks her head back so you draw back a numb.

I will tell you one thing I know for a fact! A trained ringneck will train a baby. Baby's biting is cut down by half and she gets jealous seeing Peek on me all the time and wants to mimic that too.

It boils down to this... Both are very different birds. The big girl is loud and DEMANDS to be held but is so sweet. The Baby is fine left to play with herself as long as you are in the room, she prefers to be left alone. She is mean and acts like a two year old.

You take them as they come

I have two IRNs, both green, and both very different little birds!

The male (Raja) was a chick that I bred myself, and he is about 5 years old. He is a lovely bird, but is a 'one person' bird and tends to be terrified of strangers, and at best, tolerant of family members. He talks alot, but hasnt learnt any new words for a long time. his vocab is: wolf whistle, clicks, hello, good boy, what's up raj, 'ohh', mmmmmwa!, and my favourite is "hey raj".. "whats a pussycat say?"... "meow meow!". he loves his mirror and his favourite toy is a green felt soft toy with red hair (i think he thinks its the embodiment of his reflection..). he isnt a cuddly bird, but he steps-up very well and is great to handle, and never bites. Because I have been studying, I made the decision to get him a companion. Its a decision I dont regret one bit!

His arch-nemesis/best friend (depends what mood they are in  ) is my baby female Sari. She was handraised by a breeder, and weaned early december (so she's about 9 months old now). She likes cuddles, and was a biter, and although she has been trained to resist the urge I still dont always trust her! She is mischevious, and bosses Raj alot. As Mikaela noted, baby ringnecks definately learn from older ringnecks! Sari knows most of Raj's vocabulary, although there are a few things she hasnt quite perfected yet. she is also yet to voice any new material of her own, but im sure its in the pipeline. Another thing she has learnt from Raj (unfortunately) is that all strangers are scary and must be screamed at... we are still working on this one!

Despite their differences, Raj and Sari get along famously (Raj even feeds her) and they are great pets.

This may sound a little sick but I actually like that my girls refuse all others. Only I exist in their world. I dont know why I enjoy this and probably shouldnt.

My Irn is a green male about 11 months old that I got from a pet shop at 9 months. He is aggresive, mean and moody, I had his wings clipped a couple of weeks ago and he is settling down he now lets me touch him which is good even my daughter can get him to stand on her arm now.
glad I got him. Tasha

Oh tasha:

Im sorry your baby is mean and moody. There could be a million reasons but in your babies case, probably because he was in a pet store not being handled. Also, rinknecks in general are aggressive birds UNTIL you win their trust.

You keep *trying* to touch that lil booger and it will all be worth it one day. Take my 5 month old hen, very mean! Until a few weeks ago I decided "she can bite me til me hands bleed... I AM taming this bird. And I did. She still hates touch but tolerates it to some degree and she now steps up with never any bites. For her, that is great success. So, dont give up and keep us posted on the progress. Not too long ago I was having to remove her from the cage with a stick... lunger beast

Does your bird talk yet? If so, what does he say?

Hane (hah-nay) is a normal green ringneck. I assume, for now, that he is a he. Especially since he now fluffs up his head feathers and makes little noises while pinning his eyes and moving his head up and down- which is a behavior I've seen in only male budgies so I'm hoping. ^_^

Hane isn't aggresive unless he's in his cage, but I can almost always tempt him out with a sunflower seed. He likes it when I flip him over onto his back and that was the only way I could touch him during his "needs anger-management" stages. He LOVES food. Anything food he loves.

Hane lives to eat, while his brother, Tsume (sue-may), eats to live.

Hane and Tsume are very different. Since Tsume is my sister's bird, he is kept in her room while in his cage. Hane is very aggresive towards Tsume at times. But Tsume is always trying to get in Hane's face and Hane doesn't like that. Tsume loves verbal attention but not touching. While Hane will accept some touching and even rubs at the back of his neck now.

It's interesting to see them both grow up. ^_^

I've been called 'birdbrained' before, but somehow I don't think this is what they meant. say:hah-nay

My Irn is called indy he makes clicking noises and hisses sometimes he will chatter on and on for ages it is so cute. I wonder if because there are two budgies in the cage beside him that this could be part of the reason he isn't bonding so well what do you think? Sometimes I think that he thinks he is a budgie.

There could be some validity to that. He has companionship from them, although not hands-on as if they were caged together.
