Post by thisel »

hey all, found site last night and thought good place to check stuff. we have a green irn called spazz. mainly coz when we first got him he looked so uncoordinated. he has a bigger cage now and seems happier, and after about 6 months can finally have him on my arm. i saw post about bluffing and he didnt bluff. actually drew blood a few times. guess he got stuck in cage for a while after that. new cage and new irn, a latino called bella. shes about 3 yrs old and pretty but very skittish. spazz also bullies her. how long will he get over that? thanks all.

Hi Thisel,

Great to hear about Spazz and Bella..... :D I also live in Victoria.
Well I can't tell you much about the skiddish time however, there are plenty of great people on this site that could help you out. Time and patience are a great thing.
All the best with your birdies :P

Based on how others have talked about their birds' "bluffing", it seems to be real, blood-drawing bites and not so much simply bluffing and trying to scare you. Kinda inaccurate.. but oh well. That's what I'm seeing quite a bit of so far. Sky hasn't started that yet. He's about 5-6 months old, so it'll be starting soon.

Hiya thisel

I am in NSW, not far from Bathurst. :)

When my girl went through her "bluffing" stage, she to drew plenty of blood. Definately nothing bluff about it, she meant business! lol
But she has passed through and such a lovely bird.

It is so hard not to react when pain, dripping blood and a bird that has decided you ar her target for the day, but luckily it doesn't last all that long.

How old is Spazz aprox? Is Spazz a definate male?

How long have you had Bella for?

Do you keep them in seperate cages?

I would introduce Bella & Spazz slowly as Spazz has already defined his territory and an "intruder" has come into his domain & upset the apple cart.

The should over time get used to each other.

It is also breeding season here, so if Spazz is old enough, he could be trying to impress her and breed. If you haven't had Bella all that long, she would be still trying to get used to her surroundings and not be in the mood.

I have found that females tend to rule the roost except in breeding season where they decide to be submissive to the males, (gotta let the boys think they are boss sometimes  :P  )

umm umm ummm,
you'll hafta excuse me if i sound inexperienced ( my big word for the day) because we arent that knowledgable.
spazz i think we have had for 12 months and bought him at 12 weeks, according to the pet shop.
last week we got bella from a diffrent pet shop. first shop didnt seem to have a quality of bird we liked. the 2nd shop seemed to have some brains and a huge parrot we thought was wicked cool.
ok we are easily impressed. we got spazz a new cage because we thought the first cage may have been a bit small. bella and spazz share the cage to get along fine if the cage isnt closed. soon as we shut it up spazz gets all dominant and lets his testosterone fly.
we think spazz is a male but not 100% at this point of time. we can see a dark ring on his neck but depending when you look to if its there or not. sounds stupid i know but sometimes we have looked for it and cant see it, while other times it just jumps out at you without any looking.
hope this helps without making me sound too much an idiot.
basically we thought spazz looked really cool and has some real charachter while bella seems real indifferent to what anyone thinks. pretty much a complimentation to each other i guess.
ohh and yes both birds really hurt when they bite though spazz doesnt seem to really latch on now. like he couldnt give a rats what you think.. bella is still settling in so i sorta expect she is nervous about everything.
