It doesn't seem like bluffing...

Help! I don't understand. I just got my IRN 10 days ago and he is 4 months old. He acts like he is scared to death of people. He came from a great owner/breeder and he seemed fine the first day or 2. Then he started this thing where when you reach out to him, he gets scared and tris to fly away. He is perfectly fine when he is out and plays with his toys, etc. Just when we go near him. He never tries to bite-just acts like he is scared. Does anyone have any suggestions???

My new guy tried that just recently too, and I have had him for about 2 months now. Toki is the same age plus a few weeks. I think it's just a wierd phase, or maybe he is just nervous with new people. just be consistent, and keep handling him or the problem will definitely get worse. Toki tried this for a week, then gave it upo because playing with people is too much fun for him to pass up. just give your bird time to adjust and keep up on him. he will be fine

Time. Young birds require a very large amount of attention if you are going to have a vibrant friendly bird with various people. Also pay attention to what you are wearing when he freaks out.

My pet boy is terrified of hats and very blond hair :/ No idea why, he is just terrified of both.

Same reaction here.

Day 12 with Threio, 3-5mos, almost comfortable with me, starting to let me do maintenance in the cage w/o running laps around the cage.

When I do maintenance we have a dividing line of about half way now. I figure by Monday I should be able to do maintenance with him inside with no problems.

I used a consistent pattern with doing maintenance feed/water change times and sleep time consistent everyday. Routine is key.

Next week he should be comfortable with me when I start the Step Up training.

Thank you everyone very much for the advice. I was really hopeful that it was some sort of phase. We just went on vacation (which is why I couldn't reply sooner) and took him with us and I really think that helped a TON!!! He will step up now much easier and doesn't seem to freak out near as much when you go near him. I think it will just take time like you all said. I am now on day 15 and see a huge improvement even from 5 days ago. Thanks again!!!
