How do i get my IRN to like me?

Post by lutino »

He/she is about a year and a half and ive had lutino since 4 months old. He is mostly aggresive towards me. He use to just step up onto my hand, but now he rebels and lunges and bites :( He runs head first at my mirror too lol. He is very lucky hes only in his cage at bed time. Hes not bored or hungry but i dont know why he is so aggresive towards me!!
He trusts me in a way though, im the only one who can put him to bed or get him on my arm. He is scared of almost all other humans, however he is not scared of me, just aggresive.
Im a uni student, so hes in my room at the flat. He feels very uncomfortable everytime i take him out of my room.
I at least want him to like me lol
Any ideas PLEASE!!?

As I think at 1.5 yrs old he would be past his bluffing stage. Sounds to me lutino might be trying to rule the roost and boss you around. His headbutting your mirror indicates to me he might be in a "coming of age" time and sees his reflection as another intruder in his domain  Depending on where you live, is it breeding season there?

You could try rewarding his good behaviour towards you with food or toy. When he tries to bite you, give him a command to stop, can be "STOP", "NO" or "ARH HA" or whatever you like. Try making your voice in a short sharp firm tone to show you mean business. The moment he stops what he is doing (most likely out of shock you dared interupted him lol) when you give the command, reward him with his treat. You will need to keep doing this everytime until he realizes that command means to stop what he is doing. Also even though it is hard, don't react or pull away when he lunges and bites, as in his eyes he has won and bluffed you making him YOUR boss. lol

It will take a bit of time if he has gotten away with it for some time. Animals don't need to get away with anything many times for it to become a habit. :)

Hope something here helps you and lutino.

Good luck.

Breeding season in Australia starts around August, so am guessing around the same for New Zeland. Although last year my IRNs laid their first egg around middle July. I think it also depends on the weather. This winter going to be a long cold one I think....brrrrr...hate cold
