Newby Here. Got some questions straight up......

Post by billyboyblue »

Hi there,

My name is Ben, im from Australia. My partner and i have just welcomed Billy, our sky-blue indian ringneck to our home.

We had seen a few ringnecks around the place and they all looked a little bigger that what he is. He is 8-9 weeks and i just wonder whether i should expect him to grow bigger. At the moment id say he is about the same size as a cocketiel.

Any advice for helping Billy settle in to his new home would be greatly appreciated.

Regards,

Ben :)

Hello Ben and Billy.. welcome to the flock! :D

At 8 - 9 weeks, they are still very young. They grow up so fast.. especially once they get a taste for different foods, they soon turn into little piggies! Maybe the ringnecks you saw were older?

Give him a few weeks to settle in and get used to the new surroundings. Start off by just talking to him softly by the cage and offer plenty of treats. Once he feels comfortable with you around, you can start the first command, 'Step ups'. Just give him time and patience. We'd love to see a picture of your baby, maybe it could give us an idea of his size?

Goodluck.

For settling in, the young ones seem to have no trouble at all. So most of your work is going to be ensuring his future happiness by getting him adjusted to new things now, while he's young.

Of course... I hand-reared mine so I suppose they were already used to me. But they are very resiliant birds and seem to take to change well. :D

Always have plenty of toys on hand. Try to switch them out and rearrange the cage every two weeks or so. This way he will be okay with new things in his environment and it helps keep him busy! They get bored with old toys, but if they disappear for a few weeks, it's new again!

If he's not playing with the toys- play with him. Most birds are interested in what we're doing and can learn from our example, especially at a young age.

Begin introducing him to new people and letting other be his perch. It's important to socialize these guys, so meeting new people is important. I like to hand Hane off to people and then he usually gets handed around the room (everyone adoring him and giving him lavish attention) before finally making it back to me. It's something he seems to enjoy too! :)

Step-ups now will help with future problems. When Hane is misbehaving I do a few 'ladder' step-ups (one hand to the next) and it calms him down right away.

And a variety of foods will help him gain weight and stay healthy. (Avoid junk foods. A tiny cheese-it is the size of your bird's head! Think we could eat like that and stay healthy?) He'll pretty much be able to eat everything he wants (that's healthy) until he's around two years old- ours seemed to stop growing at that point and didn't use the extra food for energy- a.k.a. began gaining extra weight. Until then, let him pig out on veggies and fruits. Veggies are more important than fruits. Our birds don't get any 'junk' food at all- their idea of a treat is a piece of fruit. ^_^

There's a lot more information just sitting here on the forums. And the search feature is extremely helpful too. I hope you enjoy it here and we look forward to many more posts and meeting your little one through pictures soon. ^_^

:D Hi Melika,

Thanks for your detailed reply. Was really helpful. Ive only had the fella for 5 days and i alreadythink he thinks he is king of the castle. We have had visitors and he is quite happy socialising with them as well. Im pretty sure that he is bluffing at the moment too. We are just ignoring that.

So u think it will take about 2 years for him to reach his maximum size?? i was just a liittle concerned about how small he was, because every bird i had seen prior was much bigger than he. Wasnt sure when they stopped growing.

Regards,

Ben

No, he'll reach his adult size much earlier, but with only good foods he won't be in danger of becoming overweight no matter how much you feed him.

When our birds were just under a year old, we bought a harness and the small size was too big, so we bought a petite one. Now, the petite is too small and I had to go buy a small one! So Hane has grown, though not by much to our eyes.

It's more like... they fill out by the time they are two. ^_^

Welcome to the family :D you are going to have such a lovely time with your IRN, watching him learn and grow. Use voice commands with everything you do, especially discipline, soon they will listen to your voice and do as you ask. Come! StepUp! No! Bed time ! or Ni Ni's etc. Teach them tricks they love the play and love the attention. Give them toys, but play WITH them.

I am wondering if you have previously seen alexandrines and thats why you think your baby is so small ?? they are very similar to IRN's but much larger with a red flash on the wing/shoulder.

Read Up on some of the don'ts with IRN, such as foods, no avacado, no apple seeds, onions, chocolate or anything with chocolate or cocoa, nothing too sweet or salty. And with toys make sure there is no glues eg. some toilet rolls have glue to attach the paper that can be bad for them, or bad paints etc. they may injest, coz they love! to chew up stuff.

Anyway glad to have you here, sharing :D
