Heya, good to see people getting into the breeding world...

Whether you keep your boxes in year round or just before breeding season is personal choice I think or what the birds are used to already... I have 3 pairs going myself.. all with box year round (they actually huddle in them in truely bad weather). I clean them out after the bubs have nothing to do with the box anymore and just put in fresh nesting material a few weeks before they start to court (you could just do it once they start courting if you dont know when).

You will want the pairs together before July to make sure they are happily together etc... You will want to feed them an increase in feed and preferably more fruit and veg before.. during.. and after the eggs come on the scene and hatch... just promotes larger clutch sizes and healthier bubs.

I use slanted breeding boxes (stosp parents dropping down on the eggs) but that again I think is personal choice.. just means I never have any issues like that.

Any avairy 1m wide, 1.8m high and 2m long or larger in those dimensions should be more than fine per pair.

At this time I have the three pairs all with chicks... (two lots had 4 eggs... all are hatched and healthy.. and a new pair.. both only 2 years old.. went down with 4 eggs.. one infertile.. three hatched.. but one passed right after hatching due to unknown reasons.. but likely smothering). All have been hatched for 2-3 weeks now.

Yet right around the corner I have a friend who's IRN pair is still sitting on eggs about to hatch... nearly a month after mine heh.

So breed times are really bird dependant... but around july / august / sept are crunch times to be sure.
