Kiwi's Move

Post by TSTRM »

Well it did go much better than I anticipated. We did have the larger cage next to his old smaller cage for 3 weeks and when I would handle Kiwi I would put him on top of the larger cage. Of course Kiwi the curious bird he is would go in there numerous times and then claim the new cage. So saturday was moving day and had no problem. Got his toys out of the old cage and added it into the new cage and within an hour he had settled in. He was still just a tad unsure but seems to be adapting quite nicely. Hope this helps someone out there when it comes to changing living quarters for your IRN. Put the new cage next to the old cage let the bird get use to it and viola...when the actual moving day happens it should be a smooth transition.....

I am so happy to hear it went so well. These guys are usually pretty 'down' with whatever their owners want to do be it go to the park or move.

They are very curious to this isnt tramatic, instead, your bird is in ah of its new surroundings!

My Baby goes everywhere with me. As far as moving, it isnt the bird that posses the problem. Rather the birds STUFF!

Yep...he is a trip to say the least. Just getting to know his body language. I know when he wants to be held. Its a shame that one of his previous owners did spend a lot of time with him and then when he was handed down, it appears the next owners did nothing. What a shame because he is such a nice natured bird. Best investment that mom and myself have done in quite sometime.

The ironic thing is that I would have never selected an IRN for my next bird. Was leaning towards a Hahn's Macaw. Had very little info on an IRN just what I have heard about those "myths" that are stated in this website. Got Kiwi prior to discovering this website. But as I have stated before and many of us have been through....Kiwi picked us. He is more a mans bird for some reason but being around birds for the most of my life I know that this sometimes is the case, now he accepts mom but would rather spend time with me. The first time I handled him he was a biter, but I think it was the stress of the new situation he was experiancing. Now he never broke the skin but I did have some deep bruises up and down my arm. Now I very rarely get bit. Like I stated before learning his body language. I know when he wants to be held and when he does not. What amazes me is how comical the IRN can be!!!!! Kiwi has this habit of talking himself to sleep when he decides to take a nap. It is like he is having a converstion...well with himself. Also would like to thank all here who have provided a wealth of info!!!!!
