Yellow Ringnecks

Post by Wendim »

Has anyone ever heard of using a needle and thread to check the sex of a bird? I had a breeder tell me she did the "old needle and thread test" and the baby yellow Ringneck showed to be a male.
Also, do the Yellows have neck rings when they are mature?
I am trying to decide if I want a Blue or a Yellow. How about a poll?? lol

Thanks
Wendi

Im not going to comment on the method of sexing but yes, males do develop the ring. As do all male ringnecks with the exception of albinos. This occurs at around the second yr of age.

There have been some true albino males that have thrown a ring...it was a broken kind of brownish ring. I've seen one...KC (Prinny's Breeder) had one that she showed me...real true albino too

Wish I had one but I didn't think to take a pic...was very very cool though. I think it's kinda rare but it will happen

Albino's do not develop rings at all.
Dani, the bird you saw would have been a Grey Pallidino or possibly even a Blue Pallidino. They appear to be white in colour and they have a brown ring.

The needle and thread is just an old wives tale. But some breeders still swear on this method of sexing

I dont know what my breeder done but I think he stuck his finger in Babys bum? And said yep, I was wrong and youre right... Baby is a boy.

He had said girl from hatching until now (14 months).

Did he do that? Or it just looked that way. I just took my bird back and was like... did he just sodomize my baby?

He would have checked the pelvic bones which are near the vent.
With Lovebirds, a lot of people sex birds with this method. If the bones are close together, the bird is a Cock. If the bones are wide apart, the bird is a Hen.

Of course, this is only accurate if the bird is mature. I have never tried this method with Ringnecks and never will.

Not necessarily, a lot of people actually believe that it is 100% accurate.

Baby looks like a Cock. I haven't seen many videos but from what I have seen, he is acting like a boy.
