newbie ringneck owner

Post by Pamzie »

Hi everyone. I am a new, first time owner of a blue ringneck. His name is Skyler. I just got him 3 days ago, and could use all the information I can get. I was told he's about 7 months old, so I guess I really don't know if he is a boy yet or not. lol. He is quite nervous, and likes to bite. Sometimes quite hard. How can I teach him to trust me? He will occasionally let me pet him, but tries to bite when I raise my hand up. when I bring him out in the evening, after being in and out of the cage all day, he seems to get very angry and mad. He will bite me, the furniture, etc. scream, flutter his wings and there's nothing I can do to calm him down, but when I put him back in his cage he is fine again. Can I handle him to much? Or maybe I'm doing something to scare him.
If he's never been handled, will he become tame with time?
Is it true that they get their adult feathers at 2 1/2 years old? I notice that he has a slightly lighter blue ring arounnd his neck, if he's only 7 months old, would he have this already?
I hope this isn't to many questions. lol :)

I too have a new baby blue IRN, Nila. :D S/he has a light blue ring around the neck and s/he's only about 3 1/2 months old. I had her to the vet for a check up and they drew blood for a dna test to see if it's a she or he but it takes about 5 weeks to get the results. I'll let you know. Since I too am a new IRN owner not much to offer by way of advise but you will see Skyler's personality develop day by day as he settles down into your home and heart.

Hi and welcome! We have a great little Search tool...I recommed using it as most topics that our new owners are asking have been gnawed on for a while.

Ask specifics if that doesn't answer any questions
