Will they still be nice??

Post by megan »

Hi, I would like to ask all of you that have breeding pairs if either of your pair are still pets, meaning can you still handle them. Or is it once you start breeding them they no longer will let you handle them? Please can someone please advise me before tomorrow, I am suppose to pick up a 3 yr old male with issues. My female Pepper is 7yrs and very friendly. Thanks :?:

hi,
It is said that once breeders become breeders they are no longer pets. I would not advise you to handle them if they breed. I am not for sure how the transition goes form pet to breeder. I think the bird gets aggressive so the owner assumes they are no longer pets and they need to become breeders. But I have only read this to be so in bigger birds that breed when they are six or seven. I am not sure. I give my breeders treats and talk to them, which is as far as I go. I do know that when they do have eggs or babies they are very protective no matter how sweet they were before the clutch! I think you need to have a mind set that they will turn on you. It might be better for you to purchase other birds for breeders instead of breeding your pet.
I am sorry for not logging on yesterday, to get back with you. I hope you did not buy the three year old male for your older female. I have heard it is not wise to put an older female with a younger male. She might kill him. I have a pair that is like this though. I have a five year old hen with a three year old male. She has not hurt him, but it doesn't mean something won't happen if you introduce yours together. Mine were together for over a year now, but they have not laid for the previous owner.
If you did purchase him, put him in a cage next to her for a few weeks. I am not for sure of the seller, but you might want to consider putting the bird in quarantine for a few weeks too. Let them see one another and go from there. I have introduced males to a females cage with no problems. But I have read introduce the female into the males cage. I don't know which is correct. When you first introduce them, watch them for a good hour. If he or she nips at the other separate them. I would recombine them in a few days and see if they get along better then.
I hope this helps!
