She's Talking, She's Talking!

Post by winkybear »

Hi -

I have found out a bit more about my Nikki, Lutino IRN. She was hatched in December of 04, so she is now 15 months old.

I found out from Nikki's breeder that she was sent to a person who trained her to step up and talk before she was sold. Nikki's first owners did not do much with her and she stopped talking. She also stopped stepping up but she is much better now.

I have been working with her as consistently as I can, and constantly saying Pretty Bird to her.

This week she has been doing her 'wolf whistle' (American slang for a whistle indicating an attractive female) and saying "Pretty Bird" !!! over and over!!!

I am SO excited!

She is trying to say something else but I can't figure what it is. Her breeder says she was saying Pretty Bird, Hello, and was working on I Love You when she was sold to her first owners.

I am singing the first line of the chorus to the song 'Yellow Bird' to her in hopes that she may sing it some day.

Yellow Bird, high up in banana tree...

She is learning 'Bath Time' and she just loves the sprayer. One day I hope she will say Bath Time when she wants me to give her a spray.

What an adventure being owned by this bird is! I am totally smitten!!

Winky... I can relate to your happiness. My Baby just started talking too.

Be careful what you wish for though because I accidently provided her with at least a 100 word/phrase vocab and she talks alot.

Its like having a three year old around that talks alot. I am SO glad she does talk. Dont get me wrong but I had no idea I was instilling THAT much speech.

She speaks in context. She is usually correct in her gender selection when referring to people. (Tells me I am a good girl and tells her baby brother he is a good boy). Its freaky the way she talks, to be honest.

I spend 27/7 with her all of her life. She is my best friend. She has heard every fight I have had with my husband ('no be asshole Poppy', from me saying "poppy, dont be an asshole, just let it slide.) To 'Jared is a baaaad boy' and then mimicing my laugh...

WHICH I HATE BECAUSE IT CREEPS ME OUT.

If you would like a small version of her speech visit my page. There are 8 videos because I kept them under a minute. The lighter ones seems to be better.

Here is the link:

For whatever reason, she didnt start with words but entire phrases. But again, she has heard everything I have said for a yr. And Im very voerbose.

I do hope you get to hear her call 'Heeeeere Kitty kitty kitty kitty... so precious but as Murphys Law would have it, she reserves it for when she wants to make me really happy.

Everyone says she tawks like me. Notice a southern accent in her?

PS We are agree Baby is a girl but we all thought differently until recently. I KNOW... and feel pretty confident others believe my Baby is a boy. However, until the ring comes she is my girl. I dont want to give her an identity complex. hehe

Wow! I really enjoyed those videos. Thanks for sharing.

I didn't hear a southern accent, where are you located?

Nikki is spending the majority of her vocalizations screaming, but she screams less than she did at first. My hope is that she will stop screaming one day soon. I have tried ignoring her, leaving the room, talking softly to her, etc, but she still screams.

The screaming is mostly in the morning and then again in the late afternoon.

One reason I don't mind her screams is that she is now following a pattern of screams then softer noises, then Pretty Bird! :D

Sometimes it goes the opposite direction, bups, beeps, clicks, smooch, Pretty Bird! whistle, Pretty Bird! SCREAM! SCREAM! SCREAM!
