Angry Ringneck!

Post by ChiMoAlexia »

Hello! My baby Bloodwing will be a full 1 year old in February!
It was fun! I am wondering how I can hand tame my baby?
He lets me pick him up. He loves getting food and will even pry popcorn out of my fist. He takes food freely from me.
But unfortunately, he will not me pet him.
I cannot touch his feet, stomach, back or head. Which is strange because he adores kisses on feet, stomach, head and back- and he even gets agitated when I stop giving him kisses.

So I'm confused as to why he hates my hands when he so freely takes food from them, lets me pick him up and such.
I my birdy and I'm sure he loves me - but I don't know why he is so vicious toward pets!

How can I pet my beautiful bird?

Becareful with pop corn if it is sugar coated, it will not be good for him, he needs to be able to trust you before he will allow you to pet him, look at various threads on our forum.

Hi Cho,

It sounds like he has an underlying issue with hands. A lot of birds do, because hands do all sorts of unpredictable things, like grab the bird.
Irns aren't known for being cuddly birds that like to be patted anyway. They can be trained to accept it using positive reinforcement. I haven't bothered, I just let mine be the way they are.

About kissing your birds back and belly, it is probably not a very good idea as it can lead the bird to thinking you are it's mate. This can cause a range of problems for both you and the bird! Your bird does not think he's a little baby human, even if you treat him like he is.
I think this article is worth reading:

Don't worry, I pop the kernels myself so I know that I know it's safe for him!!
And uh oh! I didn't know kissing his belly was bad!

This thing is, He will lower his head and ask for pets, I'll pat him maybe one or twice, then he gets angry and goes to bite me.
I understand and retract my hand but he lowers his head and asks for a head rub again!

Sometimes I worry he is confused. 0__0
