Help me with my lutino baby

Post by Prodromos »

Hi to all.my name is prodromos i am from greece and i have a lutino ringneck baby named "roulis". I want your help with my baby.i got him at about 5 weeks old immediately from his nest.he is now 7 weeks old ( he was hatched at 8 Of May exactly). My litle bird never asked for food since i took him from the breeder not even after long nights without food .until now he is forced to feed the formula and never eats too much..any time i try to give him more formula he vomit. I cant tell he is frightened because he always wants t be with me ( he follows me around in my house). He looks very healthy and energetic. He began to fly as well the last two days.. My real concern is how i will know that the bird weaned since he never asks for food anyway and how much i must force feed him to help him begin t wean.i have to mention he has lost enough weight this period but looks very healthy wants to play all the time and fly. Please help me because i am very confused . ( sorry for any mistakes i dont know english very well)

I have a few questions for you and then ill see if I can help.

How often do you feed your bird?
What do you feed your bird? Name of hand rearing formula
How do you feed? Syringe or spoon?
Do you warm the formula or keep it cool?
Is his crop ever full?
Do you feed him other foods besides formula...fruits, veggies?
I am owned by my birds...and I wouldn't have it any other way :D

Hi thanks for the reply!
The formula i feed is kaytee exact the breeder give it to me.
Since i took the bird i feed him every 3 hours (not at night ) because he never eat much food ( he eats less than half of a syringe without asking for it, i force him to eat and if i give him more of that he vomit) so i did more feedings a day because of this..
However the last two days i reduced the feedings to 3 a day ( because i read that in this age the feedings must be 3 to 2 ) and he ate a whole syringe without vomiting.
Yes I warm the formula and i believe that his crop fulled the last two days (the other days never fulled without vomit)
I put in his cage daily apples , peach, cabbage and parrot seeds but he has no interest for them he never has interest for food generally and this is what confuses me about how he will wean or how much food and how often do i have to force him to eat..

The crop needs to empty between feedings, so I think you may have been over feeding your baby. He should be on 3 feedings per day at this point with the last feeding at around 10-11pm. He should be getting about 20ml at each feeding. The formula should be warm, but not hot. At 7 weeks he should have very small cooked pieces of vegetable like carrot, peas, and sweet potatoe and soft fruit like bananas. Feed these by hand right after a formula feed until he learns the taste. Spread some small seed like cockatiel seed on a flat service and let him learn to forage for his food. If he fights the syringe it is time to move him to a small spoon. At 7 weeks I usually start adding banana pieces right into the formula and offering it on a spoon. At around the time your bird starts to fledge he will take less food for a short time. Do not force him to take more. It is very important for you to wean your bird properly. And although you may be tempted, please do not clip your birds wings until he has fully fledged.

The crop is always empty when i feed him and he usually eats 6 ml if i try t give him more he vomits ..the most amount of formula he has eaten until now is 10 ml so if you say about 20 ml i dont believe i have over fed him. Also he doesnt fight the syringe he fights me trying to feed him..he would never eat from a spoon he doesnt has any interest on eating even when he is very hungry after all night.i have to put the formula in his mouth by oppening his beak to shwallow it and after more of 6-7 ml he starts to vomit like he had enough.the only explanation i can give is that because of the begining of flying he wants to reduce his weight and refuses the formula .by the way he weights 110 gr at this time... Right now he can fly very well and i dont tempt to clip his wings yet although i believe he has fully fledged

I can only tell you how I wean my babies...if you have concerns it might be time to take him to a vet.

Ok thank you very much. I asked if you had anything like this problem with any of your babies before. My baby seems very healthy and energetic. It's something wrong with his appetite for food. He always refuse it.

No, I haven't had this problem. Usually a bird will only spit up if his crop is over full, if it hasn't emptied before the next feeding, or if he has slow crop or crop burn. But you said his crop is emptying, his food isn't too hot, and you are only feeding him every six hours. so i really do think you should take him to an avian vet. I wasn't being rude, I was trying to tell you that I can only tell you my experiences, but I am not a vet, therefore can't give you a reason for your birds behavior. Forums should be used for advice, but not a diagnosis. I was simply stating that if you are truly concerned with your birds well being that you should take him to someone that can give you more answers.

Thank you
