Indian ringnecks in Bahrain!

Post by cherylinbahrain »

Hello everyone,
My name is Cheryl and my husband and I moved to Bahrain (island off Saudi coast) in August 2012.
We put up a bird feeder in the yard and have mainly doves, finches, wrens, the white cheeked bulbul (bahrain national bird), and Grey Frankolins visiting.
However, today Jan 30, We had an Indian ringneck visit! We have seen them around the island but this is a first for our yard. It was a female as it had no neck ring.
What a beautiful bird! We will be putting up a feeder just for them to see if we can intise more to come :)
Take care.....

Hi Cheryl,

If you are able to gain the trust of that bird you can feed him/her with your own hands. I know of people doing it with wild IRNs. All the best and please keep us posted.

Thanks for the replies!
Once we get the new feeder up, I will try the hand feeding...
They are really a lovely bird. I have cockatiels of my own (4) inside. They were shipped here to Bahrain from California...we all made it in one piece, with no disasters!
I notice the times we have seen the parrot they were high up in the date palms. I bet the dates are part of their diet. Although, there are no dates now in the winter, so I guess they forage for other morsels. If I can manage a pic...I will post it!

Hi Cheryl,

I am also trying to gain the trust of a wild IRN in India. But as of now still struggling. He just watches me and flies away, He has not picked up the treat yet. He does pick it up from another window from a lady i know. Lets hope you have better luck there.

How exciting....! Yesterday we had 2 wild IRN's visit (both males) our feeder. I got a pic, tried to post it, but site is not uploading it for whatever reason....sorry :( Now my husband is motivated to build the parrot feeder!
Does anyone have a recommendation for what to feed them? We will get a parrot mix from the souk, but what else would be good?
Thanks....

Hi Cheryl,

Good to here that IRNs visited your place. Try to place some ripe gauva fruit cut in small slices or you can place it whole also. They love that fruit very much in India.

Welcome Cheryl, You so lucky to see those magnaficent birds in the wild. Wish I could, but here in south africa we don't see them. I have a green male named Kiwi.

Little Buttercup,
Great name for a bird! I used to have a Senegal named Nemo....he was also a male. If I ever got another parrot, I would get a female. Males are too agressive...I had to give him up to a breeder because of it :( .... too bad....
I am really enjoying seeing the IRN's. They are a very beautiful bird. My husband is almost done with their feeder, so we will see if more will come! Will keep you posted!
