Hi there, new ringneck owner

Post by mattmak_09 »

Hi there, I've just got my new ringneck and i'm running into trouble.
He was parent raised and i've had him for 3 days. Hes flight feathers are all grown in, and hes looking bigger than a green cheek already. The seller told me hes seen the babies out of the nest box and exploring.
I work most of the day and I close my room door (im a university student) so he can have some peace and quiet.
He is very scared and shy.
I work during the day so i don't see him eat or drink. There is poop but mainly urates-the white part. The poop part is green in color-not very usual compared to my gcc. The two birds have not met each so its just him.
I've had him for 3 days now. I leave a slew of food for him, pellets, seeds, fruits, veggies. He has touched the fruits because they are out of the dish when i come home. When I'm home hes doesn't wonder about the cage-as in still very scared once he sees me. Just peerchs and watches me
I'm really scared hes not eating.
Help!

are you feeeding him seed as well? check the seed, blow on it lightly and the empty shells will blow out of the dish . sometimes its hard to tell the difference between empty and full seed, this is one way you can determin.
also check the bottom of the pellet dish, are the "crumbs" if he is eating there should be a mass of crumbs at the bottom of the dish i always have to empty out 1-2 table spoons of pellet crumbs
also is there food in his water dish? most IRNs will drop pellets or just about anything in their water dish, which should be a sign of them eating as well.
hope this helps a bit

Hi Shonna thx for your reply.
I do believe hes begun to eat now. Theres more poo around the cage bottom. I leave my room door shut and the other day I came home from work and I saw him perched by the food bowl and water bowl on 2 different occasions- meaning probably one thing. Water bowl is clean however? He now normally perches at the same spot.

He is braving up to face me but with the occasional shying of the head (tilting to the side yet still keeping an eye on me).
I still havn't caught him in action eating or drinking. Still leaving fruits ever morning for him.

im glad to hear it looks like hes eating more!
sorry its been a while to post, ive had some health issues to sort out.

im surpised his water dish is clean! I have to change Micahs at least twice a day because he either...poos in it...or throws food it in to soak then forgets about it lol. hes definatly a water bird.

have you tried some partially dried fruits? or maybe some apple pieces? apples are pretty easy to tell if they have nibbled on it or not leave the peel on too.
