hi my name is Kathy. I have just been given a IRN, because the lady that bought him(???) couldnt cope with his squeaks. I am giving him(???) loads of attention (and fruit n veggies), but i am really just learning myself. He has already bitten my husband (haha) - neither of us are scared of him - but i neither know how to sex him or age him - or for that matter get him out of biting. He isnt talking yet but sounds like he is trying (after listiening on this site - we realised how similar he sounds to the practise runs) all help and suggestions will be greatly helpful.
I have fallen in love with him and would like to make him as happy as we already are (even the blood blister doesnt matter)
Hi Kathy,
Welcome to the board and our extended family! There are many experienced irn owners here who will help you along the way. I'm not so experienced. I too have been bitten and scarred many times! One of my irn's is a brat! But we're working on him. Please make sure to post often and ask as many questions as you want! They've helped me out of so many jams! We also love pictures and video. So make sure to post those too.
Pictures would help greatly as far as sexing and ageing goes.
But the basics are as follows.
Males get a ring around their necks at around 2 years old. Males do a mating dance/display which there are videos of in the video forum. Males tend to bow their head down for scritches females tend to pull their heads back.
Albino (white) birds dont get a ring male or female.
Lutino (yellow) and Creamino (yellow and white) males get a mainly red ring around their necks.
All other male ringnecks get a black ring around their necks.
Young birds tend to have all black eyes, more mature birds have the iris visible.
Young birds usually have a lighter coloured beak and less black.
Young birds also have a much shorter tail than the adults. If in decent condition my baby Yuki has a tail about 17 cm where as Kiva coming up to 2 years old is pushing a 25 cm tail.
Thank you very very much for your replies. I will - as soon as I figure this out - put some pictures on. I can put my hands into his cage without getting bitten - but when we go near him to give him attention he lunges. He already has my two dogs (both cross staffies) into submission and the cockateil has been sulking - even though we have never ever been able to go near him. One thing though - when we are talking to Simon (IRN) Tango (the cockateil) answers back with a squeak - he has always squalked.
Sorry must go - Simon is squeaking - i think he wants a grape (his favourite
hi again everybody. i have just figured out this website thingy (a lot of the little grey cells have now been used). I still cant figure out how to post pictures on here. Please feel free to click on the website address in my profile. If anybody can age and sex my bird i would be grateful - they only clue i have been given - is that - the last owner thinks he is a he and that he is about 10 months old
Alot of us use Image shack to upload pictures to. You can have them auto resized as you upload them and are given links to the pictures, to paste onto the forum message.
you end up with a homepage like this http://www.dropshots.com/kyria (your username will be in the place of mine/kyria) But you are limited on the length and amount of vids you can host at one time.
I think a couple more pics in a not so relaxed pose, will help more with guessing the sex. Kai often sits just that way and looks the spit of your bird. But when he is active and walking about, playing or eating he is soo smooth and streamlined and often has his shoulders out.

Thank you soooo much for your help - She will now be known as Simone (pronounced Simon as not to confuse her - she has had about 2-3 name already).
We aquired her from a lady who ignored her - we have since had the original owner before the lady come and visit our home and he cant believe how much she has reverted back to the wild ways. He could handle her and she played with his young sons - sitting on their shoulders etc. We were told he could wolf whistle and had just started trying to talk. He said he is about 10 - 11 months old although he will check with the breeder he got him from for us.
I am acutually allergic to Tango (my parakeet) but nothing would force me to get rid of him, and nothing has happened with 'Simone' so he (sorry - she) will never ever have another home now .
Any help or tips to get her back to being handled would be appreciated, our budgie afew years ago was soo tame it was scarey
