What Calculator is correct?

Post by JimHcctx »

I have been playing around with two calculators:

http://www.gencalc.com/gen/eng_genc.php?sp=0PsitIR

http://www.halsbandsittichmutationen.de ... tPage.html

After endless arguments with a friend about what babies are coming out of what, I am starting to question everthing.

I noted on the second link, its a "Test Page" and not a final product(?). Can anyone confirm that either of these calculators is accurate or inaccurate?

Are thier any others I should be looking at?

Thanks

Hi the last one was written by me and should be correct. But if any one find an error/mistake please let me know. The first one is correct for most combinations. But one easy to follow/see error is seen then calculating grey(DF) x green. Without "show visuals only" checked this calculator is right but if you check this checkbox and click generate then you will see the error/mistake. ;)

Hi Madas,

What about Aqua or Emerald, no one seems to have in calculators.

Thanks Madas, I like the calculator, and after much back and forth, my friend finally pulled out the book and realized I (and the calculator) wasn’t wrong.

Calculator comments: I use it a lot, mostly day dreaming about various pairing, but it does help me learn. Some things about it are not as intuitive and a help file with some various details would be great! For instance. For about six months, every time I wanted to question what you would get when you paired a violet with something else, I got a lot of violetgreens in the offspring not realizing you had to click both violet and blue to talk about a violet blue bird. While you probably designed it to assist more advanced breeders, the newbe's could really benefit from a few helpful hints. Another example which I haven’t figured out is every time you select turquoise, automatically displays as DF. Also, I have played with the calculator at least 100 times over the last year and just noticed the grey box on the top of the screen wasn’t a reoccurring pattern, but a menu for adding and saving pairs.

Genetics question: How many generations back will a birds ancestor influence the pairing. In the case that I was discussing with my friend. He had both the parents and the grandparents of the birds and they still threw colors that could only be achieved if the grandparents were split to something. How many generations need to be considered?

Thanks
Jim

These names are still being debated and the mutations are still being investigated, that is why you don't see them in genetic calculators. Take South Africa for example, here aqua and emerald (specifically in IRN) are interchanged by many breeders and considered to be the same thing. The emerald mutation is very exciting, with UV studies showing the possibility of it not being a parblue mutation at all, but a seperate primary mutation. Time will tell, and genetic calculators will follow. :)
