Hello I'm new to the forum and a first time bird owner, got my lovely ringneck Pikachu a couple of days ago, he's supposed to be Lutino but he looks more green to me!
Anyway he's just a baby and not tame yet he will take apple from my hands, hesitant but I know I'm making progress since the first couple of days he wouldn't at all.
I'm wondering how do I go about cleaning his cage without destroying the small bit of trust he has in me? I dont want to towel him and scare him or anything.
He doesn't bite but when I put my hands in his cage to put new toys and food etc he screeches and flaps like mad!
Any tips would be appreciated about cleaning and taming as well!

Quietly, slowly, talking quietly and maybe singing softly. That is how i started with sanjay. I let my hands linger so he would realise i was'nt going to try and grab him. Taming is ongoing, as i refuse to have his wings clipped, but it was'nt long before he would accept food from my hand, "kiss" and preen my hair. It takes time with a semi feral bird but when they start to bond with you it is wonderful!, and well worth the wait.
Re: Cleaning untamed ringnecks cage?
Thank you for the reply. Pikachu isn't clipped either so I understand that makes it harder. I'll definitely keep at it I really want that bond with him that you're talking about,
Also I'm confused I'll get some pics up in the next few days but he's meant to be Lutino but he's very green! Not as bright as a normal green ringneck but still far from Lutino.
I'm new to ringnecks but correct me if I'm wrong, Lutinos have a red ring and green a black ring right? He's meant to be 14 weeks old but hes getting a green ring which to me makes me think he's older and also female? Would this be right?
I love him all the same but considering I paid £40 extra to have a baby male Lutino when I could have got a green one for less makes me want to know as I may have paid so much more then I had to. He's gorgeous dont get me wrong it's the pet shop I'll not be happy with lying to me

Re: Cleaning untamed ringnecks cage?
Male lutinos will get red ring with a bit of white around it but not until they are mature - so baby lutinos won't have any ring. My lutino Charlie's ring has only come through this year, just after his second birthday. Females lutinos will not develop a ring at all (I think).
Male greens will get a black ring with a bit of red around it when they mature. I think female greens will get a feint ring but I'm not sure on that. My blue female as a feint ring that is grey in colour.
Regarding your bird's cage - do you ever let your bird out of its cage? If not, that's fine but I was going to say that one solution to your bird's reaction to cage cleaning is to do it when your bird is out of the cage. Ours don't get scared when we clean the cage but can be prone to the occasional territorial bite so I tend to do their food, water and cleaning when they are out of the cage.
Best wishes.
Ellie.

Re: Cleaning untamed ringnecks cage?
Personally, i waited a couple of weeks before cleaning sanjays cage without him in situ. I wanted him to settle in and get used to his surroundings first. I also wanted him to get used to having fairly close contact with me and his daddi.
