what sort of toys to get?

Post by chuckles »

i have put some magazine pages on the bottom of the cage to keep my bird cage clean but i noticed that my bird like to sit at the bottom of the cage and shred them into pieces . this made me wonder if it would be better to get him some toys . any ideas what sort of toys i can get him and btw i dont have specialized pet shop for bird toys so it have to be something general.

Hi chuckles

Getting him some toys is a good idea. I wrap my bird's fruit and veg in newspaper and then place it in a baffle cage (see http://www.myparrotshop.com/hanging-toy ... od_49.html for a pic). Some people don't like to use printed newspaper because of the dyes used in the ink so if you are unsure you can buy unbleached and unprinted paper. My vet was happy with my birds using printed newspaper so I just use that. I try not to use glossy paper though. I also found out that in our country newspapers use vegetable dyes. Given that your bird is already used to shredding newspaper I thought this might be a good place to start.

You may also like to create your own toys. Check this link out for some free e-books on creating your own toys: http://www.parrotenrichment.com/. There are also some great threads on here about making your own toys.

If you are interested in knowing more about foraging (making a game out of having your bird find your food, similar to what they would do in the wild), check out these links:

I've also discovered that my guys prefer toys with smallish bits of wood that they can chew and destroy (if the bits of wood are too big they also tend to ignore them). Plastic toys tend to go unused with my guys. Paddlepop sticks are good and raffia and other paper-based shredding toys are ok but they are not as popular as little bits of wood. All birds have their own preferences so if you buy a toy and they show no interest, keep perservering.

There are some tips about choosing toys here:

It's nice to see how much you care for your bird. Best wishes. :)

Ellie.
