i have had my irn now for going on the second week, she was born on nov 3 2011 and she is still getting used to me, i have not had her out of the cage because she can fly and when she got out by accident she was flying into the wall etc.
the breeder said she clipped them but they must have grown back in.
she is getting more used to me i can tell she is more comfortable and she is anxious to come out, she still gets agitated when i change her food etc but not like before so its getting better.
she is waking me up to fill her veg/fruit container and she is now interacting with me when i am talking to her, as long as i am sitting on the couch which is prob a 1/2 foot away.
i feel sorry for her inside the cage i wondered if i should take her to a pet shop or vet to get her wings clipped? then i might be able to get her out for some exercise and possible interaction, can anyone give me any suggestions?

Re: new irn question
I would suggest clipping the wings for taming and training and then allowing them to come back later on when your bird is comfortable in the environment and with you. That is what I've done with my bird, I'm just waiting on his flight feathers to grow in and we'll see how he does. I have 3 cats so flight to me is important with my birds.
But I would not suggest taking him to a pet shop, take him to an avian vet that specializes in birds. I have seen HORRIBLE wing clipping done at shops by inexperienced careless people. An avian vet is an expert in my opinion and has much knowledge and experience with birds. Good luck!

Re: new irn question
Hi I have a 6 month old IRN that we have had for about 3 months. She started off like you said very afraid and wary. We started off by feeding her from our hands in the cage. At first she would cling to the side of the cage and not come near us but after a while curiosity got the better of her. Once he/she will take something out of your hand you can try and work out what food they like best. We found straight away she loves cashews. After that we started letting her out of the cage and letting her get to know her surroundings. Yes she did bump into a few walls at first, but when does a baby bird in the wild not bump and crash into things. Keep feeding her from your hand but never push the issue, if she doesn't want to then leave her be. Once you have gained some trust you will surprised how quickly they change.
We didn't go for clipping her wings as I didn't believe I needed to to tame her. She probably isn't as cuddly as a bird that has its wings clipped but that is fine by me. She loves to climb all over us when we are watching but still doesn't like if I grab her when she is playing up. I personally have no issue with clipping wings but don't let yourself think that you need to to have a tame playful bird all it takes is patience. Hope this helps.

Re: new irn question
hi and thanks for the advice,
it is just over a month now that we have had her and she is definitly responding much better to my constant talking to her through the cage.
she still won't take food from my hands but the last 4 days i have left it open and put it on the floor she comes out and hangs out by or on top of the cage while i sit by her watching tv, eating and walk in and out of the room past her cage, all so she is getting used to me.
she is squaking for my attention quite often and constantly peeking at me around things wanting me to talk to her.
she definitly shows off a lot and likes it when i build her up to sound like i am amazed at the climbing etc she is doing, she is quite the ham i can see that already.
it seems as though it is coming together slowly, i plan to have her always so months really won't seem like a lot for her to get used to us....when i plan to have her a lifetime. baby steps.
