Mikaela, They say that a 747 jet produces 149 decibels of noise, a Molluccan can produce 147 decibels. You tell me, is that loud? Yes, she is very loud, everyone had to stop talking and wince your eyes when she let loose. And if another bird went flying off a cage, oh God, cover your ears! My IRN pierces our ears with her shrieks, but nothing compared to a cockatoo. Unfortunately, she was my Mother-In-Laws and she gave her away. I wanted to take her but my house is not big enough and my children are too young right now. Just two weeks ago I saw her in our local pet store, not for sale but belonging to the manager. I was in tears to see her living in there where she has started to pluck her chest feathers and I know she is not getting the food she is used to(ie. toast cut up just right) and the routine and cuddles that she is used to. I cannot go in there anymore without leaving in tears. I wish I had have taken her anyway.
Did you see the picture of Beanie showing off her new feathers? She is so proud and so are we.
Mikaela, I encourage you to visit Mytoos.com. EVERYTHING you DON'T want to know about cockatoos is on there. Visit the torture page as well and have a WHOLE BOX OF KLEENEX ready and read everything on the site. Cockatoos are VERY different birds and require constant attention. Most are jealous of any other bird. I am not trying to put you down, but generally if anyone says that a cockatoo is their "dream bird" then they haven't done the proper research. So many people say that and then come to Mytoos.com looking for help. Please check out this site, it can give you all the info that I can't put into one message. When you first get on the site, turn your speakers way up and it will let you know what a cockatoo really sounds like. I knew that I could not provide the home that this Molluccan needed. Nobody can. Cockatoos are very different from any other bird and can not be domesticated. They are wild animals, no matter how they are bred. To prove this, there are thousands of cockatoos in rescues and most will be rehomed at least five times in their lifetime. Sad, isn't it?
If you get a cockatoo from a chick, most likely in the next five years, it will hate you. You are their mom but they are ready to leave the nest and don't want a mom anymore, they want a mate. Cockatoos are one person birds and that bird may not choose you. Cockatoos can easily bite off your finger, or an eye. WHEN, not if, you get bit, you will not be saying ouch and running for a bandaid, you will be running for the emergency room. If you have children, definately reconsider. If you enjoy going out for more than a couple hours, you'll have to have a babysitter. If you have neighbours, forget it. Good chance that you will have police at your door for noise disturbance.
Cockatoos run around $2000-$45000. No that's not a typo. There is a cockatoo in a petstore half an hour from here that is priced at $45,000. That's Canadian dollars.
Please check out Mytoos.com. There is a message board like this one as well. And if you still think you want a cockatoo after that, then PLEASE visit some rescues because there are so many that need homes. Not to mention, they would be a lot cheaper! That way, one can pick you. And you can see what their personality is like as an adult. I have very often heard the term referring to toos as "Jekeyll and Hyde". Just remember, that a too will most likely outlive you(lifespan approx 90 years), you will have to make arrangements for when you are unable to care for it anymore. Check it out, let me know what you think.
Beware.....remember, breeders and especially petstores, no matter how much they care about their babies, are in it for the money. Bottom line. So they will tell you what you want to hear.
Most breeders dont actually make that much money selling birds ESPECIALLY Ringnecks. The price is dropping out of them SO fast. What used to be thousands of dollars a few years ago is only hundreds now. Most are actually at a loss when it comes to these birds. There are bad breeders out there but there are also very good breeders out there too.
But I agree if you are anywhere near a rescue place look at there first and never buy from a pet store.
I'll throw in my two cents worth here.......I AGREE. We had a pet 'too (briefly) that was my mother's Aunty's bird. Jack was 87 when we got him. He was an absolute bastard of a bird. Because my Great-Aunty Vera had died, and she had had Jack since her early teens, he was very distraught that she was no longer around. We used to use welding gloves to clean his cage. He got hold of my dad's fingers the first week we had him.
Apart from all of that - he was extremely loud at daybreak and dusk and annoyed the crap out of all of us. We ended up giving Jack to another relative who was more prepared and equipped to deal with him.
Nyaa~? I dont have a cockatoo. Jay came home told me we could get one from a friend at work. But I declined. It's tooooo big and we already have so many other birds. Maybe when I retire I will get a macaw.
Yuki is yellow and white enough for me, she can pretend to be a 'too.
I so wanted one.. but we couldnt take care of it properly.
Neo .. this might be a silly question.. but how do you tell which of your suns are which ? purely personality or do they have slight colour variations ?
