This is for Jens benefit - what is your birds FAV. treat

Post by kyria »

Jen asked me in another post what Kai's fav treat was, she would love to try to find remmi's so any suggestions :-

What is your birds all-time favorite treat that he/she would do anything for ?

Kai's is Melon seeds (rockmellon, honeydew etc.)

I found out simply by watching what he ate first up of all the things on his fruit/veg plate, and then took that out of his regular feeding schedule to keep to treat him with.

Cheers !

I watched Baby sell her soul to Satan through the sliding glass door for spray millet.

Very sad, tried to save her but she wouldnt listen and is now on the dark side.

Thanks you two! I bought some pumpkin seeds today to see if they'd go for them. So far not much interest. Remmi likes grapes, but nothing that he goes for. Just what he'll eat. I just can't seem to find that something that he goes nuts for. Which really bums me out cuz I would love to train him. So if anyone can help me out here, please do. Thanks!

Hugs,
Jen

My birds like any form of people food. Anything that is a treat.

Apple is a good one, Ringnecks go nuts over corn.

I also treat them with Nutra-grain (brekkie cerial) pancakes, they dooo love chippies but I rarely give them those. They like crunching open the shelled nuts.

Just pull out whatever you can find, throw it into a mix, give it to him and see what he eats most of

Sounds so easy, but with my guys they just don't seem to care. Maybe I need to do this when I'm home all day and can watch them eat. But so far no people food interests them. Nothing much interests them. Which is a major bummer.

Although Baby's favorite treat is BY FAR a sunflower seed she no longer gets any.

She was once a VERY vicious bird until I ran across research stating that sunflower seeds are known to cause agression in ringnecks. She never ate another sunflower seed and within 3 days she was a TOTALLY different girl.

I know through personal experience that sunflower seeds DO lead to aggression. I dont know if it does in ALL ringnecks because Im not lucky enough to own them all. I was carrying my bird on a stick one day and only days later she was stepping up and happy to do so. Never another lunge.

Birds would rather eat something YOUR eating. They need to know this is what the flock eats so I can eat it too. When I have treats and put them down they get ignored. If I'm eating something I dont even get a chance of offer it to them they are onto it right away.

I finished eating some honeydew melon last night and left the rest on my plate, Frog ignored the plate and flew over to Jay who had one half in his mouth.

Try spending time offering food to your bird and eating it with him. He would get much more enjoyment out of that than the treat itself.

Mazzie would gladly sell me down the river for just a sliver of honey roasted peanut ;)

Buddy however is a good ol fashioned Nutriberry boy, though he does enjoy a peanut in shell on occasion.

Alice... ah well, she had an excellent breeder and so far she eats everything I give her with gusto LOL. No one favorite come forward yet, each time she grabs something different first.

Well, at first it was almonds.
Then raw peanuts in the shell.
But as of Saturday, Busey has forsaken all those for dried red hot peppers.
Everything is dropped if he sees the pepper bag come out.
Ever get a birdie kiss after they've been eating hot peppers?

chilli kisses , Yep I have had those !!

Kai is on my shoulder begging for melon seeds again .. infact he takes them from between my lips and all. Our house is coverd in husks by the end of the night. The kids treat him for kisses, my busband treats him for tricks (holding out his cup) he sits with me at the computer on my shoulder giving kisses and begging. So there are husks all over the house I have to vacuum up every night :x lol

I really hope you find your treat.

Neo had a good suggestion.. wack a hole bunch of stuff together, see what he its most of .. then ommit it from the regular diet, it may take a while to realise that he is not getting that in his regular food anymore and then he will start appreciating it as his treat.

When we figured out that Mazzie was nuts for honey roasted peanuts (totally by accident) we all stopped giving them to her...except my husband. Its his bonding thing with her. For years now I havent been allowed to give her any, only daddy :)

Both of my birds LOVE their Papaya Bit treats.

We started them on them when we first got them as "treats" so we don't have trouble getting them in their cage or to help them learn how to step-up faster. Seemed to work. :)
