Semi-tame Ringneck

Post by Featherz »

Hi everyone

My IRN male was handraised but was not handled much for a few months by the breeder but he is still semi-tame. He doesn't let me touch him but is happy to climb up on to anyone's shoulder, the only problem is that he starts biting anything he sees, ie. my neck and ears. I have tried everything to stop this but he continuously persists all the while knowing that I don't like him doing that. I have tried using food to train him but my efforts have gone in vain. Does anyone have any suggestions in solving this dilemma? :?:

Hey Featherz,

Believe me, I know how frustrating it can be. Start by breaking the cycle of being bitten—that means no shoulders for now. When you want to hold him only do so on your fingers. Once you’re confident that biting has stopped you can place him on your shoulders.

If he does bite, gently pull your head away (no eye contact or verbal discipline) and just move him to your fingers. It’s important to not reward this behavior by doing nothing.

Though I know treats have seemed to fail in the past—keep using them. In time your rinngneck will start to look to you for treats. Stop giving him veggies/fruits in his cage and only give him those items when he is out with you. You have to make it worth his while to spend time with you before he can start to bond with you.

Please keep us updated!

Wishing you the best  ,
