new to IRN's - Have young female need help with taming

Post by lschlick »

I am hoping you all can help advice me with my young female. She is approx 16 months old and already I am her 4th home. She was supposedly hand raised but sure doesn't act it. I think she's going through "Bluffing" but who could blame he if this is just her disposition now. Her wings are not clipped(I want them clipped), I want to handle her, but must admit a bit of intimidation towards her. I have a couple of large playground units for her to play on if I can get her out of her cage and into the house to a safe room. She's in my bird room out back and seems very happy with other smaller non-parrot type birds. I spend a lot of time in there with her, but would love to get her into the house and on a perch so she can be with me more. I just picked her up 4 days ago. Any help or suggestions would be great. I don't know how to do wing clipping, I don't know how to restrain with towels either. I don't want to do it myself and be "the bad guy" either. I have an appointment with a vet for exam and clipping in a couple of weeks.

My other questions is relative to adding another IRN. I really want to get a weaned, hand raised baby and hopefully keep them together(not necessarily to breed) but I want them both to be pets and handle-able. Is this possible? Her cage is approx. 3 x 3 x 30" deep. I would want both to be nice and tame.

Thanks in advance for your comments!

if your girl has had 4 homes in her 16 months taaming is definitly going to be slow
but not impossible
eating in front of her will definitly help keeping her in a room where she can watch you go about your day without your attention totally focused on her will help
some people say wing clipping will speed up the taming process ( i wouldnt know none of mine are clipped but thats a personal choice)
also have one food that is only used to tame or train her (popcorn is really good for this)
let her set the pace she needs to have time to trust that you arnt going to leave her

as for getting a second irn ......
i wouldnt recommend that just yet if you want her to bond with you
if you get another irn right now she will bond with it instead of with you
hope this helps
good luck & keep us posted
