Aggressive Male

Post by JEZ Parrots »

Hi, someone just asked me for advice as their 10year old male seems to be hormonal and he won't calm down. The poor guy isn't tame, but terribly moody of late and pacing like crazy. Is there any way to help him relax? Thanks

Just a thought. Is his cage big enough?, Sanjay paced when he outgrew his previous cages

I believe it is (but don't know these people that well). They have him in the same cage for a couple of years now and this behaviour only happens during breeding season. I was wondering, would a new toy help distract him, so that he doesn't get so worked up?

I would advise to increase all types of enrichment, and don't forget soft wood for making toothpicks. If they can let him out for some safe flight, that would be a kindness. Give them some perspective and tell them how my Rocky fed everything in his cage for six months, I wish it had been pacing. Pacing, I think, would have been easier!!!!! Also, Mattie Sue Athan suggests that increased bathing will take up some spare energy.

Thanks, MissK. Wish I'd remembered bathing as one of their favourite activities! I'll bring your advice to their attention.

I think he needs to forage for 90% - 100% of his food. You will find more information about foraging here:

and as MissK suggested, it would definitely do him good to be able to fly around outside of his cage. They can also change up his cage, move his perches around, change his toys up.

Ellie.
