I've had my Ringneck for several weeks now, and she's great. She eats lots of fruit, veg and seeds, but I'm worried because I've never seen her drink water, and every time I change it, the water level doesn't seem lower.
Is it likely that she gets enough water from the fruits, or is it just that she doesn't drink around me?
She doesn't seem to drink water?

How do her droppings look? It is a good indication of hydration.
I know Nila drinks because I see him do it, but the water level doesn't appear significantly depleted afterwards. In his case it may be because he likes to drop food in there, which displaces the water.
I don't pay a huge amount of attention to exactly how much he has drunk, but he weighs about 100gms so the amount of water he would consume between the times I change his water would be pretty miniscule.

I rarely see my birds actually drink their water. Play in it...yes. Drop food in it...yes. Plus as you pointed out, fruits and veggies have water content which does contribute to their daily needs. Watch her eyes for a sunken in appearance as a symptom to dehydration, but as long as shes not lacking droppings or her droppings are not completely solid and there is wetness around her droppings in the cage, which is her urine, she's fine.....great question though
I am owned by my birds...and I wouldn't have it any other way

Hey,
Thanks, she looks healthy enough and her droppings seem nice and wet, so I guess she must be fine. I just thought it was odd, I mean, she eats out of her seed bowl next to her water, but I've never seen her sit near her water and actually drink any. Oh well, I'll keep my eyes open.
Cheers.

Well it could also depend on the time of year and wether you have central heat and air. If the temp in your house stays a comfortable temp she may not need too much. If its fall or winter her requirements are also lower. During hot dry months they usually will take in more water. My cockatiel loves to drink and then stick his whole beak in his seed. He comes up looking so cute with a beak full of seed
