Violet green or Dark green ?

Post by Gratz »

hello everyone
I just received a bird that I purchased over the phone. purchased the bird as a Violet green but I think it may be a Dark Green.
I have never owned a Dark Green so i'm not sure .
I have taken a photo of the bird near a violet blue so that I could compare the colour of the tail feather and I think the new bird has a cobalt tail not a violet tail, it has the blue sheen on the wings but I don't think that the green is that of a violet green , its more like an olive or dark green.
if anyone can tell me what I have purchased it will be greatly appreciated
ps I don't have the birds parents information just that the father was a violet green
thanks

The angle you took the pic at is not very clear , you need to take a pic of the birds tail directly from behind , That will help with the Id .

when you look at the bird in direct sunlight you will know it is violet green (It will have a blue wash over the green feathers)
my guess is its a violet green , but a pic of the two longest tail feathers will confirm.

Thanks for your advise Robert

I will take more pics , the bird is a bit flighty
I'll have to be a little patient to get a good shot

I think Violet Green.

The second bird you posted was speculated (by the board- if I remember correctly) to be a dfViolet Green SL Edged, so the colour comparison should not be compared.

I agree with Shey

The second pic is violet green sl edged, i did mention it in the saddleback thread and suggested to pair a pied to him or s-thing like that.
what hen did you pair him up to?

Brothers... most likely only 50% of siblings would have been sl edged, i assume here the father to be sl edged.

That's great news !!
I can't wait to see the young; now that's an interesting pairing.

50% of all young will be sl edged ;)

I agree with Ben, the above should be very interesting. I haven't seen emerald edged yet, but looking forward to it.

I guess you're trying to say the hen is last year's?
I really hope it does breed, i'm ready to be impressed by a violet emerald pied edged
------------
Did you realise that this pair will also test emerald in green series as well?
if emerald is a parblue mutation the green series young could be split emerald, think about that before you give to petmarket the young green birds.

Hi Ben
yes the hen is last years bird unfortunately.
ps I had a look at the violet green again , maybe I shouldn't have posted the pic of the sl edge because my other ? violet green split cleartail has the same body and tail colour as the sl edge bird
your thoughts ?

Ben, at the risk of derailing this topic, some questions:

1) Have you ever seen a green / emerald for sale?
2) Have you ever heard or seen an emerald that was bred from 2 green parents?

My own experience to these questions is currently 'no', but in SA emerald is very rare. Nobody from countries where they are more abundant wants to give me straight answers on these questions.

Johan,
1) Have you ever seen a green / emerald for sale?
2) Have you ever heard or seen an emerald that was bred from 2 green parents?

No to both.

Reason: OZ Breeders have been told that it is a Parblue mutation and investing thousands of dollars in emeralds, no one would dare pair it up to green birds to get possible splits to emerald.
prices have come down now to a reasonable price IMO for this theory to be tested.

However, remember the pic that Willy posted? it was a green violet apprently emerald bred by g baldwin.
pic below from Chris's site.
Image

what do you think?
I would pass that bird as an emerald green violet

Gratz

The flights make it so easy to dinstinguish between an SL Edged and a normal see pic below:
Image

So no the others are not Sl edged only the one in the pic above.
PS i too have that type of violet green (from shannon) - it seems to be at least 2 varieties of green violet phenotypes, as Johan mentioned a few times,
wish we could work that out as a project idea figuring out why we have diff violet phenotypes ... so many things to do, so little (slow) time.

Sorry Ben
I think you may have misunderstood the point I was trying to make
I was comparing the body colour and tail colour of the sl edge and violet green split cleartail
I was pointing out that they were very similar. So either bird ( sl edge or violet green/cleartail)
Don't have the same colour as the new bird.
The sl edge and the violet green/cleartail or even the violet green cleartail that I put pics up of are what I assumed Violet green look like, that's why I was hopeing that someone that has a Dark green would be able to compare my new bird to their Dark green. The tail still looks cobalt not violet like the other 3 birds I posted pics of,
Maybe paint.net might show the colour difference of the tails?

Gratz,

Ohh,

I read the posts too fast .grrrrrrrr

Here is a pic of my two hens, not the best pic but you can see the tail color difference clearly.

I still think your bird as a violet green, perhaps the other phenoptype of violet.
(read my previous post again, i always add more to my initial post, after i readproof it i always seem to have s-thing to add.)

Ben
Thank you
That clears a few things up
Looking at your 2 birds if it wasn't for the tail do they have the same shade of green ?
I never new that there were different phenotype of the violet green ( lots to learn thanks to sites like this one)
Is there such a thing as a grey green violet ? Or does the greygreen mask violet ?
Just a thought probably a silly one at that

By the way looks like your violet green is ready to lay eggs

Gratz,

to my mind this is one of the best reference pictures freely available, courtesy of Tienie.

Left to right: Dark green, violet (America) green, Nico Theunissen green (aka SA "deep"; some also refer to it as European violet)
Bottom: Wildtype

Thank you Johan
That is a very good reference photo

I'm still puzzled , have a look at the flight feathers of my new bird ( they are very dark green) Not like any of the other birds posted in this toppic Except for the bird on the far right, in the photo that you have just posted

Any thoughts?

*Old thread*

Hi Gratz, Did you end up finding out the exact makeup of the parents of op bird? I find it interesting that both brothers are of different phenotypes (excluding sl edged). It has made me wonder if the sire was a combination of the two types of Violet (df violet), thus passing on either a light or a dark copy to each of his offspring.

Also, did the sl edge brother breed for you last season?
