Hi guys before i own my green IRN just want to learn how to identify age of IRN's . In my country less people are have IRN species and they can found at nature in Turkey. Problem is i can not trust the seller because parrots dont have leg bands and seller dont have knowledge they said they had the baby IRNs but i want to be sure that i ll own baby one (3-6 month old ) since they are easy to tame . I did some research on google about the issue and find this brief information but i still need some help :
Step 1
Examine the neck of the Indian ring neck. Males and females reach seexual maturity around 2 years of age, marked by a bold ring around the male’s neck and a more subtle green ring around the female’s.
Step 2
Check your Indian ring neck’s feet. Scaly feet are a sign of an older bird, but may not manifest until the bird is reaching its extreme late years.
Step 3
Compare the bird’s plumage to other Indian ring necks. Juvenile Indian ring necks generally have duller plumage than those that have matured.
Step 4
Look closely at your bird’s beak. In some Indian ring necks, the beak color will darken as the bird increases in age.
/////////////////////////////////
Also i am not familiar with parrots but i have an idea like if parrot is baby or 3 to 6 month old it must be small in dimensions . I know that adults can be big as 16 inches . Maybe baby IRN small like 3 to 4 inch so i can understand it. Please enlighten me up about this issue how can i identify age IRN or please give me approx size of baby IRN by guessing month age .
Warm wishes

Re: Identifying age of IRN
Hi ragopwns
Identifying age is kind of difficult. If the male already has a ring, you know he's at least 2. But in females it may be harder to tell. I wouldn't count on the foot thing. If your bird is younger than 6.months he/she will still have eyes that don't dilate yet. The younger the bird, the darker the eye. The overall size of the bird doesn't change after 10 weeks old. At that point they are full grown. But the tail feather doesn't reach full length until around 6 months. The birds tail makes up half of the overall length. There really isn't much else. You can't use plumage color unless you have another bird with known age that you can compare it to. After having both babies and adults I can tell you the overall look of a young IRN is immature. But over the age of one the ring is the only other identifying mark. Hope that helps

Hello Skyes
Thanks for the info and fast reply . If i am not geting you wrong then 6 month old IRN must sized like 10 inches ?
And after a time it's tail getting longer and complete to 16 inches ? Also let me add another perspective what happens if its like 1 year old or something is it possible to tame him and make him talk ?

Re: Identifying age of IRN
You can teach them to talk at 1 year. That's about the time mine started talking. But be aware that some IRN's never talk. Taming a bird at any age takes time and patience. It may take more time at an older age but it is still very possible.
Body size of a IRN is 9-10 inches. Males have a 7" tail and females slightly shorter at 6". Those are average measurements. They can vary. But they will all reach full body size by 3 months of age. So yes a 6 month IRN will be full grown and about 9-10 inches.
