Way to tell chick colors as chicks?

Post by Crayon Parrots »

Dad is blue, mom is grey, and there are only 2 babies. Is there a way to tell the colors apart at around 2 weeks old? I will probably buy them both but wanted to know if there was a way to tell them apart incase I didnt. I want a blue one pretty bad. If I only buy 1 of the 2 I will get a lutino from another clutch.

I know waiting is hard lol, but you'll have to wait until their pin feathers unfurl :)

Of course, there are some exceptions where we can ID chicks if the parents genetic history is known and they carry specific genes. Red eyes, skin tone differences, etc. can indicate certain mutations before we see feathers. Fallows, ino, cinnamon, pallid etc.

At 2 weeks if you must choose a blue there is not much between grey and blue, all i can say is look for anything that's lighter : nails, skin pigment, pin feathers if there is a distinction and one is lighter then the other, take the light colored 1 as that is more likely to be a blue, assuming male is not split to anything.
Of course, if nails are white/light red eyes etc it can be that male is split to s-thing like Pallid, Ino, Fallow etc etc <as Johan mentioned above>

Try to ask the van Belle s. They had breed one last year or the year before.

I only know of breeders that have successfully combined them, but I am not in contact with them. Unfortunately, I also don't have any pics of that specific combination. Maybe the legendary Madas can assist.

Unfortunately i can't. I have requested the pics two or three times but i never got them. And for my knowledge they have given up to breed ringnecks. :(
