It will be banned here in 2010 because it has been PROVEN toxic and cancerous. An immediate ban is supposably in effect in Aussie.

The overheating of any non-stick surface containing teflon will emit a toxic gas. Whether it's your cookware, self-cleaning oven, a small fire in your stain resitant carpet, or a microwave popcorn bag.(apparently, but that one is new to me). The chemical released will almost instantly kill your birds. It is highly recommended to get rid of all teflon coated cookware if you decide to become owned by birds. Here is one story that happened to a friend of mine. It was the use of the self-cleaning feature of the oven, but cooking with teflon coated pots and pans at a high enough temperature will do the same thing.
I would not do this at all. The self claening feature works by heating the oven very high, high enough to let the teflon or other non-stick surfaces that may line the oven to go through a process called, Off-Gasing. These gases are ordeless but can kill your beloved bird in minutes. We have heard of just such a tragedy occur to a person who's mother had come in for a family reunion. She made several pies for the family reunion at her daughters house, and when she finished turned on the self cleaning feature to clean up the oven. After about 10 minutes she heard her daughter and son-in-laws Congo Grey gasping for air on the floor of his cage and within a few seconds their Blue and Gold Macaw do the same. Both birds were in the living room about twenty feet from the stove. Both birds died within eight minutes, the Grey was only 6 and the Blue and Gold 9. Her mother didn't think it would harm the birds even though she had been told this could happen. After all they weren't even in the same room so they should have been ok. So please look into other safer alternatives than the self cleaning feature.

Yep - Got rid off all of mine
My Mom asked me what I wanted for Christmas and I said Stainless Steel cookware. I got a great set for Christmas and I wheeled my trash can next to my garage door and just chunked all my old stuff. The only thing that I have left that is teflon coated is my George F. grill. I can't bear to toss that thing out, but I figure it cooks so fast that it doesn't have a chance to overheat. Also I have heard that the baking silicon cookware is not safe either. So I haven't tried it yet, but I guess I will be baking cakes in my corning ware next time.
