Hello every one first time IRN owner

Post by angel1980 »

:D hello, my name is carol we have just became proud parents of our first baby indian ringneck (dna tested) male on the 8th jan 2013 , he is 5 1/2 months old and all green , he is a cheeky little chap and has come from his breeder with a wide range of words he can say ( not that i have heard him speak yet ) he seems to be settleing down to family life but still dose not like me being near his cage at the moments even thoug he is hand tame i still need to see this as such, he dose eat infront of us he seems to come out of his shell once the children are in bed/ at school the rest of his time he is hanging upside down at the top of his cage .

is there anything i can do to help my little guy settle in more faster ?
when should i let him out of the cage ?
will letting him out of the cage inprove my chasnces of building a bond with my new baby ?

regards carol , and our IRN orville :D

i forgot to add i live in the uk , and orville lives in the living room,we have 3 children,14-9-6, 1 shih tzu whis ia 2 1/2 yrs old and 3 budgie .

Welcome to the Forum Carol my Name is James and I am also a new IRN/ARN? parent.

I purchased Mine last Sunday and he still hasn't been comfortable with leaving his cage.

But earlier in the morning today I noticed that he absolutely loves Yellow Squash (Weird? yes i know a bird that eats its vegetables). I lured him out of his cage with it but as soon as he finished eating it he would rush back to his cage. So by using what his favourite "treat" I am going to train him that it is ok to come out of his cage and reward him with it.

Try the same thing with your Orville :) see what his favorite treat is and use it to your advantage.

My birdie Simon, mind you, was not hand tame.. He has been through neglect (as I purchased him from a clueless breeder at a local flea market). So i know that it will take alot of patience and work but Hopefully the results will pay off for him.

I hope it works for your Orville (adorable name by the way :) )

hi thank you for your comments i will take it all on board :) , orville is in a small cage witch he came with  i know this is small and the only thing i can fit in is my arm , before anyone says its small i already know , i plan on getting him his own bird mantion next month  nothing will be more perfect , i did not know that he came with such a small cage at the time .
i have tryed him on apple and oranges but he only nibbles a small amout then dose not want anything to do with the stuff for the rest of the day, he has also had sqash , broccoli, peas, coliflower, sweetcorncarrots , im not sure about the veggies as he still has not gone down to his dish today , everyone apart from me is out of the house at the moment , im still trying to see what his favourate food is .
my hustband i talk to orville all the time in a low soothing voice , trying words that we already know he knows to see if we can get him to talk but no such luck .
heres to helping my baby get used to loveing his new family

regards carol keith and kids

hi im getting a good price on the cage as the breeder of orville is opening a pet shop and said i could buy the cage that she buys them in to sell in the shop and not at retail price .. ie .. she buys a cage for £49-£70 pound then sells tham at £150 + depending on the cage size and stuff so im just waiting to recive a catelog so i can order a cage from her , also she gets 20 paarrot toys for 6.99 so this will save me aswell , i just need to wait for the catoloug to arrive then i will be ordering till my little heart is content oh and orville has a bird mantion fit for a king
