Newbie looking to adopt

Post by blackhawk »

Hello all,

I'm in the research stage looking at birds and am settling in on a male IRN from ArizonaParrots.co
This will be my first pet bird after raising chickens and rescuing dogs for many years.
I'm looking for a companion friend of a different kind.
I'm home most of the time and live an active outdoor lifestyle.
My friend will probably be with me most of the time as are my dogs.
Home cage size, I'm looking into a play-top, 3152 Wrought Iron Parrot Cage:
- Bar Spacing: 3/4''
- Wire Gauge: 9&12
- Interior: 34 3/4" height, by 23 1/2" length, by 19 1/2" depth
- Dimensions: 60'' height, by 24'' length, by 20'' depth:
I also travel in a Jeep and large motorhome so I'll be looking into a smaller travel cage and another full size cage for the motorhome.
I'm thinking I'll keep the IRN out of the cage a lot of the time, in and out of my home, so I am considering clipping his wings so he can go more places with me.
I'm planning on a young bird and spending a good deal of time acclimating him to his new home and environment.
While I've done my research online and looked into other birds including the runner up budgie I'm willing to hear some input from you folks.

Thanks and I look forward to hearing some input,
Dan

My first thought is go bigger on the cage.

Another thought is that a clipped Ringneck still flies better than some of the less talented species fully flighted. You should not underestimate their flying ability.

May the Force be with you.

Thank you Miss K!!

I'll go with the largest cage I can get in my place, plus a travel backpack cage, and one for the motorhome. While my little guy is at home, I have visions of letting him use a play top cage so he can move around as much as possible as I'm home most of the day.
