Hi, First time here

Post by elaine »

Hello, this is my first visit. I am most impressed with the information I have found on this site about ringnecks. I have a baby ringneck only about 9 weeks old I am told. He is grey in color and I named him Smokey. Once out of his cage he is such a cutie, will step up, waves, takes treats from my hands and will sit on my shoulder for ages, he even preens my hair. However, when he is in his cage he generally hides in the back corner, only coming to the front to eat or if the door is closed. He only comes out by himself if no one is near then he will go to his playground. I have tried sitting in front of the cage & just talking/being there but he doesn't like it. He seems either shy, stubborn or scared. But, as I said if i manage to get him to step up he will and he is adorable. I can even pet & stroke him which he loves. Any suggestions to get him to come to me voluntarily? He is just so cute I want him to be a good companion.[/img]

How long have you had him? Has he had time to adjust to all the changes... like moving to a new house, new cage, new family?

And, some birds just don't like to climb out of their cages on their own. Mazzie will if she's chasing Buddy, but otherwise she wont. I just reach in and gently step her ... or scoop her up.

Go slow, and enjoy it. Baby IRN's are so precious!

Thanks, I have only had him for about 2 weeks. I know I have made progress in that he will take treats, step up and wave. I am really anxious for him to voluntarily come to me... lol

Two weeks is great! You can't force them into anything...be patient! It may take up to an entire year to get full trust but once you do it is so awesome. Good luck and ask as many questions as you can
