Hello from Williamsport PA

Post by calkar217 »

Hello, we are Cal & Karen and are very new to "birding". We lost our rottweiler 16 days ago after having raised her for the last 9 yrs 5 months and 1 day *Love the Rainbow Bridge forum, made the tears come again when I saw it*
My b/f's dad has a brother-in-law who has an irn that he don't bother with now since he's dying of cancer, so we are going to take this bird into our home.
So glad I stumbled across this website as I have been sitting here going thru post after post to try and get a heads up on what to expect with having a bird in the house.
I will apologize now if I get to asking questions for clarification, I just dont want to do anything wrong and want this bird to have a good, happy and spoiled life with us.

Thanks in advance for all the advice.

Karen

Welcome Karen and Cal!

You are in for a real treat! IRN's (when looked after and raised in loving environments) are such a joy to have in the home! My husband and I are also new to IRNs (3 weeks in now), and have fallen head-over-heels in love with our boy Skittles - he really has kind of taken over our lives at the moment :D It's so hilarious when my husband suggests that we call into the pet shop on the way home from town to "see if we can find a new toy or treat" for Skittles, lol!! I think he's hooked, beak and claw

You'll find a wealth of info on this site, and caring, knowledgeable IRN owners/breeders who won't mind parting with their wisdom. Enjoy your new FID :)
Regards Deb

Re: Hello - Finally got IRN

Finally we have brought Olliebird (Oliver) home. We went to see him yesterday and WOW he's bald all over his body. We had originally thought, "oh no this is a pyscho bird" as it wouldnt come near any human. After giving him another chance to "warm up" to one of us, he started interacting with me and was just "talking" up a storm with me. We brought him home since I said I thought he just needed alot of TLC since he's been ignored for the past year with no human interaction. Within 30 minutes yesterday he was playing with me, he loves to spin wheels on toy cars. Then he started to take food from my hand. Within 3 hours he was walking up my arm.

Come bedtime, when i covered his cage as instructed has been done, he was throwing his food and banging all his toys. So i removed the covering from one side of his cage and reopened his door and he went right to sleep.

This morning as soon as he heard my voice he started "talking" so I said good morning Olliebird and he would click at me and he's been "up my butt" since 7am today. He stole a bite of pancake off my 3yr old granddaughters plate this morning.

He is completely the opposite of what he was when we first met and he sure has become my best buddy.
