Training, bare hands or use of something?

Post by cassie.c87 »

I'm trying to get my IRN used to me entering the cage (he's fine with my hands outside now) but when I enter the cage, unless I have a treat he bites me and sometimes really hard and won't let go. Can I use a glove/sock etc for a while until he get's used to me entering his cage to interact with him? He let's me change his paper food/water with only the odd attempt of a bite but won't let me get near him.
Also when I purchased him from my local breeder he claimed it was hand tamed but he got him a few days prior from another lady, so I'm starting to question if he was handled much at all prior

Hi!

If your ringneck is still young, he might just be going through bluffing.

I would suggest that you wear gloves but preferably a colour similar to your skin colour so that he doesn't only grow use to the gloves. I made the mistake of trying to tame Naru with gloves but I used blue ones. Now he's only used to that colour.

Also, when he bites, don't pull away because it only seems like your awarding him for biting you.

Spend a lot of time around his cage. Make sure he seems that you're not a threat and won't hurt him. Talk to him in a reasurring tone.

And remember, have patience

Thanks for the replies. since I posted this we have improved a lot, he let's me enter his cage bare hands now to change feed/water and paper without a fuss but was unsure about me getting too close so I used a sock to teach him to step up. We have worked out when I enter his space bare hands it's only for cage duty but when the sock comes out he get's excited and steps up easy. I can also give him scratches with my bare hand plus he LOVES sitting on my shoulder while I walk about and do my thing :D
Next step it to get him to go from the sock to my hand during play time so I can no longer use it (no matter how long it takes)

Our IRN likes to step up on a perch or stick best. When you are moving to bare hands, hold the glove in your hand and have your IRN step up onto your hand. Ours loves to perch on my shoulder too and let me do whatever around the house. :)
