Hi! So I just got a new Baby IRN and I have a few questions?

Post by FeatheredFox »

Hi there!

Okay so yesterday I got my new baby from a lady at the petshop who was hand rearing the babies at her home. Only problem is that she didn't exactly explain everthing to me. She gave me cooking mix and formula. The formula says "6 weeks - weaning".

I am not sure of the age of my baby and neither was the women. But from what I saw on the internet, I'll say about 8 weeks. I have never had a baby before. I only have my one boy Naru, who I got at the age of 8 months.

So I was wondering... :

Is it okay if I carry him around a lot? He sits on my shoulder and crawls into my jacket when he wants to sleep. I'm afraid to leave him alone because he seems to want to keep going to Naru, who is on a playstand 90% of the time but Naru is extremly aggresive and I don't want to take the risk of bringing them to close to each other. The lady at the store said that she didn't keep any of the siblings or him in a cage. They stayed with her and her husband most of the time.

The reason I also carry him with me is because he had a brother and they were always together, keeping each other warm. Here in South Africa, we're having bad weather and I don't want to leave him under a heating light because I don't want him to over heat. Therefor I'm sticking with natural warmth.

He seems pretty comfortable with me but its only the second day so i don't know if carrying him everywhere is bad yet.

Another question, how exactly do I prepare the cooking mix? There's no instructions on the pack and the lady only said I should boil it. She didn't say how long or in what or in which way or what degree and so on.

Also, ishe said he only needs the formula in the evening but he doesn't eat his cookig mix. I was thinking its becauise I'm preparing it wrong. Is it bad if he gets a little extra formula in the morning? I don't want him to be hungry. And is it nessecary for them to drink water at this age?

Sorry for all the questions. :). I really hope you can help. Thanks so much!

I got Sanjay at 8 wks but because he was parent reared he was weaned. Sanjay had a nursery cage, he would not eat for the first day or so due to stress, but he drank. I introduced him to fruit and veg by putting pieces on a skewer and hanging it up in his cage. You must keep your chickster away from Neru until the older bird gets used to him, try putting their cages near to each other but not so close Neru can bite through the bar spacing.

Im from australia, so this may or may not help. With the formula we use here we add a couple of teaspoons of the formula to same amount ( roughly , u will need a thin texture once complete, runny, but not too watery) of Boiled water. then syringe feed the formula ( well thats what I have done with the 3 chickies I have hand raised :D) & agree u should not go putting near naru. She will eventually become the dominate bird but in all due time. I wish u luck and
CONGRATES on your new feathery family member :D
