Hi everyone i was just wondering if someone could give me some advice. I am looking into getting an IRN and have been successful in finding someone who has successfully bred them many times before and has a new set of chicks which are approx 4-5 weeks old. They are not hand fed and are still in the nest with their parents so my dilema is that i live 5 hours away from the breeder. I am going past where the breeder lives in a week so im wondering if 5-6 week old chicks are too young to pick up and how hard it is to hand feed them and rear them at such a young age. i have tried researching as much as possible but all i keep reading is they are better to get when they are weaned but having said that i live so far away. is it possible to take on the roll myself without too much fuss and exactly what would i likely to be in for if i do take this gorgeous little baby on? also i have one single black-masked lovebird would there be much conflicting issues between them? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thankyou in advance..... Rachael
Hi, I bought my 2 when they were 5 weeks old, but the breeder was feeding them by hand so they were feeding well for me. They are currently flying around the house as I type this. With the right advice and determination and patience you should be ok hand feeding and hand raising them. I found by trolling through this site all the info I needed was in here. Just remember not all info is 100% correct so go through as much as you can. See if the breeder will start the hand feeding process for you. Mine even gave me some of his mixture for hand feeding and the recipie so I was not changing the diet they were used to.
Where abouts are you from?
Hi Likatiger, thankyou for your reply. I am from Victoria, Australia how about yourself? I have sent the seller a message to see if he can start the feeding process for me so fingers crossed how long have you had your two for? im a bit apprehensive at the moment with the little one that i want as they are not cheap and would be devestated if i were to do something wrong and it die on me.... what colour are your two? the little one i want is blue. They seem to be such great pets and i was originally interested in buying a cockatiel until i can accross a photo of an IRN and was just in ore of their beauty and personality after watching multiple you tube videos about them. Am so excited lol. i do have a single lovebird but have not had a whole lot of luck taming her. she does step up and let me pet her if she is outside of her cage but if i try to get her out she sqawks and goes crazy as she likes to come out on her own terms. i did have two but one died not long after i got it but kirby is doing great on her own anyway so hopefully her and my to be "new addition" will get along. will keep scrolling through all the info on here and see if i can decide what to do. i think i am more worried about commiting to 4 hourly feeds and not having anyone close to let me know if im doing it right.....
