Bathing

Post by AussieGirl »

What and how is the best way to bath an IRN?

Do we need any special treatments? Or just water?

Warmish water in a spray bottle is the easiest way cos apparently IRN's dont like bathing to often (EEeeewww, Stinky birdies!! :? ) Some will bath in a bird bath with tepid water. Bathing is essential for healthy feathers and encourages the bird to preen it's self which mean's fantastically Gorgeous Birdies for all!
Pepi, our supposed green indian ringneck has a brownbeak, orange eyelids, and flesh coloured feet. Strange I thought :-)

Tony never bathed. He hated it. So I'd mist him to make sure he was at least getting wet on a regular basis. Then one day I bought him a large water bowl. Soon I started finding it near empty. Couldn't figure it out until I was taking a nap one day and woke up to him dunking his head in and throwing water all over the place.

It just took him some time to figure out what bathing was and I think for me to give him a large enough bowl to do it in.

You can mist your bird if he/she doesn't like the shower as a substitute. They need to be showered at least once a week to keep their feathers healthy and many parrot owners don't know this. All birds need water to clean their feathers regularly. Remember, keep it slow the process to get her acquainted to water. Don't move too quickly.

My bird use to get a mister with warm water. Then when I move him and his cage outside I create a water fall from the garden hose. The water hits an upsidedown bowl to dispurse the water (great waterfall). He will play in it for 5 to 10 mins once a week. He loves it. Then during the week I put a bowl out of warm water and let him get in it if he wants to. Make sure the bowl is not too deep bc they can drowned.
