Hi, i really need help. I have a very sweet Alexandrine Parrot of 2 years brought home two weeks back. Unfortunately he is extremely scared and aggressive when he sees hands and fingers. He is fine with nose touching but hands and fingers is a huge problem. He bites and will show all signs of 'stay away' aggression. I have tried to feed with hand - still no results - the moment food is consumed he resorts to biting.
I do not want to give up hope as I can see that he does not mind being petted by nose hence he is not totally against humans. Maybe there is a past negative exposure of being mis-handled and hence he has associated this with fingers and hands. He has no problem with people being close to him as long as hands are kept away.
Am reading a lot of techniques and none seem to show progress.
Is there anyway in which I can have him trust hand and figures? Please share your experience and views.
Regards

Re: Alexandrine Parrot of 2 years
What have you tried so far? I have a 3 month old irn that was very afraid of hands but wouldn't really bit but was always trying to fly away. I used a perch that I was holding to teach her to step up and I got her away from the safety of her cage and gradually worked up to stepping on my hands. It only took her a half hour to be able to step up on my hands without being afraid and flying off. Have you tried that yet? I can't tolerate letting a bird bite me without having a reaction so I have also tried with other birds using a leather glove. I never chased or grabbed the bird with it but I let it bite and bite until it realized that the glove was not hurting it and was also not going to give up. I kept trying to get it to stand on the glove and it finally put its foot on the glove and learned how to step up that way. Once it was out and away from the cage it learned to step up on my hand. It could be that he just does not know how to step up yet. Knowing that he does not mind being near your face but is afraid of hands probably means he was always grabbed and chased by hands when they needed to get him out instead of teaching it to step up. Once you have him out and he let's you hold him just fine let him walk on his cage but close the cage so he can't get back in and keep taking him off and putting him back on until he does it without having any problems.

Hi Adreane thanks for taking time and sharing on what could be done. I will try.
Re: Alexandrine Parrot of 2 years
Any fast movements can get them scared. If you are trying to be friendly with him always move your hand very slowly and talk to him to give him confidence. My tips for U , taught by my alex

Thanks dotfish.

You could try setting your hand inside of the cage, and get it as close to him as you can without causing a negative reaction. Then just gradually move it closer to him as he gets more used to it. Setting food/favourite toys in your hand might help, too. You could also try having your hand near your face when you do the nose touching, too.
