Hello Everyone,
I just purchased a female IRN the other day, she will be 2 in March. The question I have is how long should it take her to adjust to the new environment? At the pet store I was able to handle her and even when I got home and set up her cage I was able to place her in the new cage and then I took her right back out without any problems. Now whenever I put my hand in her cage she lunges at me. Any suggestions?

Hi,
She is two?! Wow, most people try to buy younger ones. I am not sure what advice to give you. I almost want to say that her being two and the time of year, she could want to breed. If she is now alone (no other birds), this might be a huge shock for her. Have a radio on for her when you are not there. Talk to her a couple of times a day. Try to handle her. When she lunges at you, do you pull your hand back? If you do, this might be giving her the wrong message....hey, I can stay in my cage and she will leave me alone. You are going to have to work with her if you want her to be handleable. She might just need time to get used to you and her new enviroment. I have my bird's in a carpeted room. Each bird I have, have had to get used to my vacuum! It did not take them too long. I would say within a week they were not squaking up a storm. Within two they weren't trying to hide. Now they know it means getting ready for bed. I have hens that are very moody too. Perhaps, your bird is having a leave me alone couple of days? I have six hens and they are all different. You have all the time in the world, just take your time with your new bird and I know she'll come around. I have breeder birds that are more receptive to me than my pet conure of four years. Best of luck! I hope this helps!
