New Cage, mesh and nest box advice ^_^

Post by MallyKat »

Hi guys! How are we all? :)

Welll!! I have two IRN's, a green male named Sanozuke (Sano) and an albino (hopefully!) female named Tempe. They're caged seperately and as of late i've been searching for a cage large enough to accomodate them both with the possibilty of expanding the flock :D (if Tempe is a girl...lol).

They are aviary birds and can be rather nasty if I go too close but that's alright, I'll nab their babies if they have any for hand raising. Anyhoo, I posted on my facebook account that I was after a age...glad I did because my neighbour ran over saying they had one they were going to throw away :o They GAVE it too me! It needs minor touch ups, but other than that it's a sweet cage ^_^.

I havn't measured it, but it measures roughly 2m tall by 1m wide and 1m deep. But my boyfriend and I are going to work on it and modify it so it's 2m long instead of tall :) This way they have more space to spread their wings and fly. The Mesh that's on it has begun to rust down the bottom, as have the bottoms bars of the frame. So we're gonna remove that and I'm hoping to put new wire on...Either that or remove the rusted rows of mesh and make the cage shorter. What is a good size mesh for IRN's? I don't want to buy one too small for them.

Apart from the rust and needing a clean up the cage is a bargain! And being free means I can afford to do it up and cost heaps less then purchasing a new cage/aviary. (so far...)

Next question! What size breeding box will I need to get for them? :) I'll get some photos up tomorrow of the cage. Thanks everyone!

That will be a good size breeding cage. Length is more important than height. The mesh I have on my aviaries is either 12.5mm x 12.5mm or 25mm x 12.5mm in the heavy gauge. I think it is 1.4mm thick wire from memory. You should be able to get it from the hardware store in a 5m roll.

If you do get new wire make sure you brush it down with a vinegar and water solution to prevent heavy metal poisoning to your birds.

The nest box size you will need is 300mm x 300mm x 600mm high.
