Just bought my first IRN.. any helpful suggestions?

Post by dexter10 »

Hey everyone, i just bought my IRN, Dexter. Ive been reading through some of the posts for handy tips and ideas, was wondering if anyone has any others for me..??

Also, i bought Dexter at a pet store, am unsure of his age, but he is still a bit (cant think of the word...) Timid? he gets scared and flighty when i open the door to his cage to change is fruit toy or feeders.. ive been looking at training tips, but it seems a scary prospect! im willing to keep at it, as it hurts when he bites haha.. and advice or tips on training?

Thanks Guys.

Ehryn.

Welcome Ehryn.

How long have you had Dexter? Days, weeks??
Is Dexter hand raised or aviary bird? That will help determine on what road to take bonding with him.

Buying from a pet store could turn the friendliest bird a bit timid over time with all the new people coming and going and fingers prodding and poking in the cage, and that is not to mention any bird rivalry that might also be in the same cage.
Then he has been plucked from his home as he knew it and taken to another strange place where he has to start all over again, getting his bearings and used to routines etc.

Give Dexter time to settle in and try not to rush things, let Dexter show you how fast to move to the next level.

Food is a great motivator. Pretty much anyone who has a ringie will say the same thing.

Keep searching and reading info, it does work over time. :)

Thanks for the reply..

I got him yesterday, so im not expecting instant results. Haha. Just want to be prepared, so i can care for him the best i can. I wasnt planning to buy a bird so soon, but when i walked past him in the window, he made me stop, fell in love instantly, he was so beautiful.

Im not sure if he was hand reared, the pet store owner, told me of all the different things she does for him, wrapping food in paper etc... but when she went to take him out he wasnt to happy. My opinion is he is aviary raised, she had only had him for a few weeks.

He is very loud already haha and does seem to take interest if i whistle or click my tongue at him..

Im hoping to get him to a vet soon to determine age and have him checked.

He is Just SO beautiful.

Hi Ehryn, welcome to the forum.

Give him some time to settle in. It will take time and patience. When you see even the smallest bit of progress, take time to celebrate your success! There are lots of threads in the forum on how to tame your bird. I suggest you spend some time reading through them.

Best wishes, welcome to the IRN adorers family!

Ellie.

Looks like Dexter is getting a black ring, so I would estimate his age between 2-3 yrs old. :)
