Dexters ( Closet Converted ) Aviary.

Post by BmDubb »

Ok, well this is UNDER CONSTRUCTION. I just wanted to get it together so he could atleast go ahead and get in it and out of his small bird cage.

The purpose I had in mine was to have a quite large, and practical aviary for Dexter. I wanted him to have space to actually " glide " from place to pace, or " take the stairs" or even climb, lol.

Dimensions:
Dexters space is 8ft Tall x 4ft Wide. Dexters highest perch is about 6ft off of the ground ( for now ). The entire top half of the door was replaces with a " double pain " soft plastic mesh so he has full view of the living room. He loves to climb on the " window " and watch and " talk " with us lol.

Features:
Vertical and Horizontal climbing limbs wrapped in indoor / outdoor carpet for added comfort and grip. Connecting the 2 limbs are soft, flexible plastic mesh " Ladders ", each limb also has a swing hanging from it which Dexter can climb the strings when done swinging to get to his perch. On the far inside wall there are a couple " chew toys " fake plants and platform. The walls have indoor / outdoor carpet attached at places to allow him to even climb the wall to gain access to his various favorite hangouts. There is a recessed light in the ceiling for overhead lighting, and 2 side lights that also double as perches. All lights and lamps use a " cool " spectrum CFL to provide a nice soft light and not get hot at all ( barely warm to my touch ) and Dexter LOVES sitting on these and " laying down " to enjoy the little heat they do put off. The lightbulbs are covered by wire mesh for safety though he never tries to bother them.

For the bathroom (lol) I removed the carpet from the bottom and replaced it with tile. I then lay blank newspaper on the bottom, and a puppy training pad on top of that.

Also for cleaning everything removes easily to wash with the hose if need be.

Coming soon:

" hide box ", higher and more side perches, more toys, and the walls will be covered in a " forest theme " wallpaper. This will be done next weekend.

( Note, the door to dexters home stays open unless were gone or asleep. )

I will take more pictures when I get it done and looking spectacular.. But, for now its still an effective, large home and he enjoys it very much. He loves being able to fly around in there and run and climb. Since moving in hes become very more vocal and just all around happier.

Hopefully you don't take this wrong at all, but have you checked for toxicities in all of the materials you are working with:?: Like is the carpeting and plastic OK if shredded and ingested? And was the leather veggie died? And most washers I know of are made of zinc, which can cause zinc toxicity in birds. If you did look all of the materials up and made sure they were bird safe I'd say cool and just wonder how long the plastic mesh window will last before he shreds it :P

Good Luck and good idea!
