Would an IRN get along with a Nanday Conure?

Post by Lisa's Tiki »

I am considering getting a Nanday Conure. I saw an ad for one that someone is selling, because they can no longer care for him due to medical reasons - theirs not the birds. He has his own cage, I just don't want Tiki to get jealous if I get another bird. Tiki has such a big cage though I am just wondering if they could live in the same cage (after quaratine and several months of getting aquinted though!) Tiki is such a little love bug as it is and he has to come join in on the fun if his cage door is opened and we are sitting on the floor playing a game or just watching TV. I just don't want to ruin that with him. Any advice or thoughts????

It depends on the individual bird. Take the worst case scenario, what if your bird was jealous. What would you do?

Kiva, I believe, Is jealous of my new IRN bought to be his mate. He will attack if it gets to close. I also bought a new Sun to pair with Zek and same story. Zek will attack her, the other two wont. Some love story. I will let you know how that goes later.
Kiva would spend a LOT more time with me if there were no suns around. He doesnt like them because they are too busy always on me, he gets very skittish around them. But They sleep next to each other. Go figure..

On the OTHER hand, when I had just bappy and Niamh. They were best buddies. They would sleep next to each other and preen each other (see photos in my gallery thru the link below) There were no problems at all.

I do think that my new birds will become part of the flock, it just takes time. Growls can actually sleep in the same room as the others now without getting hurt.

Back to the question what would you do if... If your prepared to keep the Nanday even if they dont get along, then go for it. Give them time to get along together and dont give up. I'm sure we will all help you get through anything.

I had to go hunting to find that picture, but there it is :)

Buddy likes all other birds though, he's rather unique for an IRN. He's just bird friendly as they come. If your bird can be friends with another bird, it could work out well.

But, as was already said, don't do it unless you are committing for your own sake.... theres no guarantee that the birds will like each other :)
