Wing Clip at the Vet

Post by kyria »

OMG! First time at the vet.

I think that was more stressful on me than on Kai. He is back in his mansion sleeping and I have a sudden headache. Stress related no doubt.

You should have seen him defend himslef. What a warrior. :D

I might join Kai in the rest thing he is doing.

Cheers !

Wing clipping day sucks so bad, then my babies are pissed at me for a week... that is until I started leaving the room until right before they are done and when they pop their head of the towel, they think I saved them. :D

Learned that ploy from Melika. 8)

The Vet wanted me to talk to him nicely to keep him somewhat calm, so he well and truely associated the whole ordeal with me.

Kai has woken up from his nap and he is acting so quiet and withdrawn. He is eating and drinking, he has stepped up to me and kissed me, but walks quietly away from me and then sits all fluffed up and sulky, he isn't his usual naughty playful self at all  what have I done to him.

Thats really bad! When I clip wings at work I take the bird out the back away from its owner and do it with another staff member, never with the birds mum around! They can hate me all they like, I dont live with them!

I clip Datsuns wings though, she will hold up a wing for me (after much convincing) and I hod her while James clips. Datsun really does not mind it, the quicker the better and then she can go back to playing/stealing/breaking things

I find that if I just say hello to a bird then clip quickly then give them a wee cuddle they dont hold a grudge... except for a lorikeet once, he was not impressed! He swore at me too! I can, nine times out of ten take the bird out to his parents without putting them back in a cage and we have a snuggle and a chat while we walk around together. Much less traumatic that way.

I had my sun Bappy clipped for a time, I also had Niamh clipped too.
She was very timid and didnt want to be anywhere near me. Once she regrew her flights she became just like the other suns, It took her a long time to gain confidence in her ability to fly, it changed her personality completely.

Niamh on the other hand. Well you know ringnecks. He plays chasey with his owners. They have to chase him before he will step up, dont get me wrong this is a GAME to him. He will fly to them. He will step up, is never agressive and he loves them. His personality was the same clipped or not.

Kiva is trimmed, he can fly but it's just a bit harder. He flies around alot before stepping up, this is because of the suns. They are pretty much always around me and Kiva doesnt like being too close to them. It makes him nervous. When I can get him alone he is happy to sit on me and step up.

Call that vet and tell him I said he is stupid, then give him my number.

I recommend he have someone to keep him 'calm' when he calls.

Expect a week of him being pissed. That is how long it takes my girls to get over stuff.

Is that about the same amount of time for anyone elses baby?

If he gets nippy, spend as much time as possible having him step up and be with you. Nippy, after trama, can result in a biter for months, sort of like if you play into bluffing.

If he nips... DONT DRAW BACK just talk to him softly about that 'ol mean man, what did he do to my baby' yada yada

Peek-a-Boo gets very nippy after a wing clipping, not now that I know better than to be around until right before the towel comes off. Then I have my bird and remove the towel and they think I saved them :D

Hey, these girls manipulate me constantly, I can play them out a time or two if its for their own good. hehe

Well all seems well. Thank god .. He is taking solice with me and "very" if even over affectionate, I love him.

He actually seems to stay on my hand better now and only goes to my shoulder when I put him there, maybe its the clip or maybe still scared, but once he is on my shoulder he snuggles up really close to my cheek and give me lots of kisses.

Dad made him this as a surprise for tomorrow. I will decorate it with all kinds of new toys, especially at christmas. It should take his mind right off what happened.

Thanks Daddy (James)(jim)

Not a very good picture, I will take more with Kai on it another day, Jim only just made it tonight and kai is asleep for the night.

Its so nice to have you all here to run to when I feel worried and scared. *kisses* to you all. Thanks

That is an awesome stand.

Yes, now that he is clipped life will be alot easier. I dont enjoy playing 'catch the birdies' especially when they get under the kitchen table.

They make me look like such a fool then, I can see the laughter in their eyes.

Well I've had Bibou clipped twice in about 4 months and she's still flying around. I don't know why they refuse to clip the primary feathers as Melika suggested. So Saturday we're taking her to a different vet and hopefully they will do a better job this time so i can get some peace instead of climbing on chairs getting that little rascal down from places she's not supposed to be.

At my place, the first of every month is special wing clip time. I put the scissors in my back pocket and venture out to the aviaries. Only problems I have is when I am clipping Chuckles' feathers, Sunny will antagonise him and vice versa except that when I am holding SUnny, Chuckls tries to bite her in her vulnerable position. He'll jump on my shoulder and do everything in his power to get to her!

My birds know its standard procedure now. They don't like it particularly much but its for their own good. I have the technique down pat too. I am right handed so I hold the bird in my left hand against my body and with my two middle fingers, extend out their wing and with the scissors in my right hand, clip. I do it with lots of light around so I can see I'm not cutting a blood feather.

Hane's been playing that game lately, when he gets on the floor he'll "wander" away when I reach for him, lol. Most of the time I just let him wander until he gets bored or gets annoyed at the dog noses pressed to his back the entire time... he he. (slight exaggeration, no worries about the doggies)

So far we've only clipped Hane and Tsume once, lol. Though Tsume will be clipped soon as he's growing his feathers back in.

But with all my birds I've clipped only Killer needs toweling (if you can't guess why from his name.... lol). And he just never sees us clip him, just after when he pops his head out of the towel and he's "saved" from the evil invisible clipping people.

My favourite bird to clip is Sam, one of the budgies. He's never bitten me, lol, so he just sits in my palm and I open his wing and clip. Such a beauty. :) Love him.

I've been called 'birdbrained' before, but somehow I don't think this is what they meant. say:hah-nay
