Help and Advice please, New ringneck owner

Post by bluepepe09 »

Hi, I come from Edinburgh and have just got a 7 week old Hand reared Blue Ring-neck on Saturday.

Bit of background first.....

I got him from about a 3 hour drive home covered in a cage with a dish-towel after this he was very settled all the way home.

I let him out in the same room as his cage for a while first to stretch his wings, and then tried to get him to step up onto my finger. He was quite nervous so i did not rush it eventually I got him to step backwards from the frame hanging on the wall by gently touching his foot with my finger and saying "step up".

He would stay on my finger for a few minutes sometimes and was walking up to my shoulder on occasion (now stopping that...too risky) . And I would use this method to get him out of and into his cage.

he gets freaked and fly's away if i put a treat near him, most of the time he sits on the mirror or somewhere high cleaning himself, or chewing the curtains....lol

He was great all weekend and didn't bite once, handling him for short periods while he was out, and would sometimes let me stroke his back.

On Monday we both had to go to work, so I let him out in the morning while i fed him, them let him out again when i came in from work. he bit myself and my girlfriend several times drawing blood on 3 of occasions.

Unfortunately my girlfriend and I did pull away on one occassion each(tried not to but was getting harder and harder, and there was a gentle no spoken once...but after that I started blowing gently on his beak and this seemed to help him calm.

I persisted handling him after this and he did not bite me after, he seemed to calm down. (he had some food in between)

My questions are

- Can an IRN be bluffing is his eyes are not pinned?

- How long for and how often should I be handling him each day, and
when is the best time (i.e after feeding, after letting out for a while)?

- How long should I let him out for each day to roam free in the house?

- how can I get him to take treats from me without freaking? (he was
taking treats from the breeder and his wife)

N.B I give him verbal reassurance constantly when he is being good. and when he steps on and goes back to his cage...

- Will he start to explore more of the room (and eventually the house) as
time goes on? (as he will only ever go to high places just now)

Your advice would be much appreciated.

Thanks.

:)

Hello! Welcome!

1: I don't know but i doubt he is bluffing, some ring necks wont go through the stage.

2: It depends on the bird, if you see him just resting then just leave him be. If he is walking around, eating, then do what ever. A great thing to do some times is while your passing by his cage & see him walking around talk to him like call his name & say hello, what r u doing. If he gets used to that he will love it & get excited.

3:Let him out wen ever you want, its your bird. I tuck my bird in before i go to sleep & close the door. When i wake up i just open the door & he climbs to the top of his cage wen he feels like it. I also keep him inside wen i go out for things if no one else is around to watch him.

4:Time, it takes time for things. Work your way, first place treats by him & after a while start hold the treat & bride him to come to you.

5:Yea, these birds are explorers. Give it time, first off if the birds wings are not clipped then he has more of a chance to explore. If they are clipped he will still explore.

Good luck, get us PICTURES!

Ill get some pics up soon ..

Do all birds get pinned eyes with white surround and a black dot, or do some get a dark brown surround and black dot, which makes it hard to see if they are bluffing?

I only ask as I see on looking closely at his eyes they look may be dark brown/black but hard to see.

Its because he is young. Scroll up at the
picture that says indianringneck.com..
you see the eyes on a mature bird?

Also type in google baby indianringneck
& you'll notice they have pitch black eyes
with little to no orange around the eyes.
