hello, newly owned by a ringneck

Post by ryan »

hello everyone,
I recently adopted 2 birds, one being a ringneck (mr. spinner), and the other is a quaker (ethel)...thier ages are unknown and they know thier names...we didn't like them at first, but they are actually suiting names...We never had birds before, but have been interested for awhile. We have good friends with birds, and I have always been drawn to them...Anyway, boy what a personality these ringnecks have! Our boy spinner is quite the feisty guy, is quite rude, and generally kind of a prick :D . He loves to put his face right in ethels and goes "HAHAAA"..they are definitley not bonded, but they spend a lot of time in ethels cage together...just not that close...ethel nips at him all the time, but they never fight or hurt each other....the cage we recieved them in is a double cage, top and bottom..mr spinner always climbs up to the top cage to be near ethel, even though she doesnt like him...Anyway, i joined here because i need to learn a lot about these birds, spinner in particular...Ethel is loving and gentle, while spinner is a little jerk!! I have read a lot about "bluffing" and i am not sure if this is what spinner is displaying, but he does it all the time...I am pretty sure he is at least 3 years old, possibly older...everything i have read suggests that the bluffing stage happens earlier....he bites me all the time, and if i take ethel and put her on my shoulder, he has even flew off the cage to bite my ear nearly off....I am not sure what to do about it. I have just kind of ignored it, sometimes i wince though...I still talk to him and interact with him everyday, and he is never confined to his cage....only when we arent home...Well, i think that was quite long enough, and have probably bored everyone..here is a few pictures of my little guys

here is my fiance michelle with ethel

Welcome Ryan & 'family!' Great looking birds, and I love your blunt assessment of your birds personality!! They can certainly be a bit like that, but the good far outweighs the bad hey.

Hiya and welcome from me as well. :)

lol, yes ringies do have a very strong personality, but that is what I like about them, they make their own rules lol

I have never had any experience with Quakers but have been told they are great little birds.
I have them on my "must have before I die" list! :P

yeah, don't get me wrong, I just love Spinner...It's really amazing to me how large his personality is..I think with enough attention and treats  he will stop biting me...they came as a pair from a woman who took them out of what she described as a pretty awful home, I wouldn't doubt if he was abused...Boy is he brave though, doesn't even flinch when the dogs are checking him out
